Absolutely pointless in my opinion - and to those who think the greenies will hate this thing, think again, they'll be rubbing their spiteful little hands with glee at the extra ammunition against all things petrol driven.
Perceptively put 'mikeyv'. This is exactly what will happen, but, it's not the 'spiteful greenies' as you class them that will be the problem. It's lobbyists, opinion-formers, the general public - the MP's that represent them and all associated strata: quangos, committees, media etc etc.

These vehicles [Porsche, Audi, Mercedes et al] are a joke; they are largely driven badly by people with NO interest in driving, whose main interest is to intimidate others. Comforting psychology isn't it.

Finally, consider this: these 'tail-gating tossers' [as another called them], aren't just tail-gating, no, they're leaning on you and trying to 'push' you out of their way. If these vehicles genuinely add to the driving landscape why are they bought by maladjusted, 42 kilogram tarts or ego-inflation sufferers with a need to feel superior? Our crowded, inconsiderate country needs more of neither.

Why do BMW continue to have every niche in every class of car...they seem to have missed a trick here and not made it a convertible, but give them time. laugh

That's a fantastic idea! BMW should give you a job, here's an artists impression...

What a load of old tosh.

I have two 4WD's
One for hauling / towing on off road for work and gaining access to difficult to reach places.
The other for on road use, towing and generally getting about with family.
Whatever the weather or other problems which may exist.
Some minor off road which may require a little more ground clearance than a normal vehicle.

It's all about personal choice not intimadation.

For you maybe - you may be the most skilled, considerate and exemplary 4WD owner, having bought them for the best of reasons: that however doesn't reflect the opinions of millions of others. It's fantastic that you represent the exception but, Rick, you are just that, an exception - millions can't be wrong, and I suspect you are not entirely unaware of the animosity towards these things. For the most part, these things are driven by people that know they appear arrogant, drive badly and don't care. I respect your choices and your opinion but mine still stands.

So they didn't make an M3 CSL for... this?

God damn it BMW, really dropped the ball.
They are a business mate. These will sell. CSL's probably won't.
I agree with both points of view. I really wish they hadn't "wasted" time on these follys, and done the CSL, however understand exactly why they did it.

Footballers, soccer mums, rappers, pidgeon cocked show offs, and celebs will be queuing up by the dozen for these vehicles. The M brand is a powerful marketting tool. Sadly M division's hand is forced to develop cars for the largest markets. I'm 100% sure that they could develop a perfect CSL or R8 beating M1 supercar, but these would likely end up loss leaders. Not a term that board members are too fond of these days.

Is this not just a X5 with M Sports kit being tested? Madness if it is a proper M model. A good friend has a DMS tweeked new X5 D and that is plenty fast enough for such a car.

Where is the M3 CSL? Or a light weight 135i?
When you mention lightweight 135i it made me remember something. What ever happened the 135tii ( or whatever it was called) ?

It's probably going to sell reasonably well - why shouldn't BM play to that? I don't want one but I'm not going to whinge because they've built the thing to satisfy a demand.

There's demand for plenty of cars I don't want to own:

Indian Nana-Tata-pishy £1,000 plastic thing
Pretty much every Bentley
MX5 getmecoat
pretty much all superminis

But I'm not bloody moaning they're on the market.
