I'm all for cars and vehicles that are not sensible, but not this one. 2.7 tonnes of tarted-up military off-roader sold for an obscene price. No, I can't stomach it. Especially since it uses a way cool V12. It's got to be a crime somewhere to waste an Italian V12 on such a monstrosity, no? At least in Italy, I would think... wink

Clearly, the author and I are in the minority in this one, but I won't budge. It's a zero for sure. Anybody posting here saying it's a hero, I don't want to see your comment that the Lotus Evora is too heavy. biglaugh

Apart from weighing 2.7 tons (which can be excused when it's for a purpose) and being a waste of a perfectly good, but ultimately unfit for purpose engine, it's ugly. Not charmingly ugly, purposefully ugly or brutish ugly, but proper worst-excesses-of-the-kitcar-industry ugly. Which can never be excused - especially from an Italian supercar maker.

If it were an Iveco and carrying a big ol' derv engine in its nose, the world would have been alright and it wouldn't be on the PH radar at all. But as it's a Lamborghini, a PH Zero it is.

Infamy's an odd sort of bird.

You might not have elected Muammar al-Gaddafi given the option but a fascinating persona nonetheless.

A bit like Scott Alexander (who I know Plotty was seeking counsel from, yesterday hehe)

Saw and heard one in Cheadle, Orange County a few months ago: you would have to have been a staunch commie not to have been partially moved (in a pleasant way) by the spectacle.

But yet wasn't it the Commies who actually bought the things by the fleet load (albeit the oppressors and not the oppressed)?

I can't think of another PH article that has ever got it quite so wrong.

Agreed, although I think it's probably a case of 'was a zero, now a hero' as times have moved on.

What?! if a pistonheader (is that a word?) were to have a 4x4 (clearly they wouldn't because a 4x4 that is non essential is the work of satan himself and anathema to anything pistonheads stands for.... I'm rambling) it would be this one for it's utter pointlessness. Isn't that the point of being a car nut? to love cars for no rational reason? We need to celebrate daft, over the top cars, especially as we may not be seeing any new ones for a while...

Well, if the LM002 is a Zero, it would seem to indicate that Pistonheads has drooped down a gear - from Top to Fifth...

When I first saw this thread I thought it was in PH Heroes. But a Zero? No way!

It's a glorious machine that is so wrong it's right. Kind of like the Audi RS2 in a way. And I think it looks great even now.

Plus - it was kind of a trail blazer - look at the high performance SUVs we have now - like the Cayenne Turbo, ML63, RR S/C etc.

However, none can hold a candle to the Lambo with it's amry / terrorist chic.

What larks. First thing to say of course is that everyone is entitled to their opinion. I stick with the Zero view based on (a) my memory of the contemporary press reports (a mixture of hilarity and derision); (b) seeing one blocking out the sun in the Car & Car Conversions section of the Link House car park, challenging any journo to take it out into the Croydon traffic (not many takers); and (c) its ludicrous overall concept. That opinion hasn't been changed by the rosy glow which (as JayKaybi notes) now appears to enshroud the LM. Any objective assessment of the LM would turn up a lot more cons than pros, but the rest is purely subjective, so I guess you could equally slot it into either Hero or Zero. But tell me this: if you had £80k (woh!) to blow on something special, would a cantankerous '80s Italian off-roader really be your first choice? Or even your hundredth? I think 'Hero' certainly applies to the person who buys an LM, but not to the car itself. The powerboat engine option makes me smile. They do say that the two best days in a powerboat owner's life are the day it's bought and the day it's sold. The LM is a powerboat with a tax disc.

I think Tony you and I are in a minority. You raise a very gopod point. Many "heroes" are cars whichw e would own if our circumstances change. Despite the bravado, very few on here would take the plunge and actually buy one.

Thanks William, I reckon there are quite a few false gods out there that could do with a damn good debunking.

yes

I'd not own a Countach either. Genuinely. I think they're spectacularly absurd, bordering on hideous, in pretty much every sense. Doesn't mean it's not a Hero. In fact, they're a Hero because of that absurdity.

In fact, there are plenty of vehicles I'd not own, for any number of reasons, that are brilliant just because someone had the audacity to make them.

It's simply a glorious motoring irrelevance and I love the fact that it was produced. Viewed with the head of course you slowly shake your head and mutter "Stupid", viewed with the heart you slowly shake your head and grin "Stupid!".

My old man was offered one of these in the mid '90s - it was in the US and had been confiscated from some drug lord and the car needed to be exported from the US.

I seem to recall it was £20k, or 30k USD....

Unfortunately he turned it down on grounds of fuel economy....

Precisely. I don't care that it's a bit st, and if they go for 80k then presumably there are enough people who agree.
