I actually had one of these about 10 years ago. Needed to shift into a cheaper motor at the time so sold my old Jag off and went looking at the auctions.
Bought the cheapest car (with an MOT) going through, £198 IIRC, and it was one of these!
Had a few issues:
The door locks had been unlocked using a screwdriver at sometime which meant you only needed something similar to open them again
The heater didn't work and I never fathomed why
Jumped out of second gear if you backed off the throttle
Oh, and generally was a pile of st.
However, I used it for 9 months then px'd for £900.
There was a real sense of adventure and thrill driving it everyday, not becuase of it's incredible good looks, acceleration, handling or road presence. No, it was just the thrill of it actually starting and then managing to coax it the 5 miles to work each day. It never did actually let me down!
Think it fair to say that I wouldn't have another one though

I'm a (pre GM) Saab lover - having owned a 900 (4-door), coveted a friends 99, and (still own) a 9000S. The latter was a lesser car, without much of the Saab personality. OTOH, I bought it when my son was 20 months old, rode in a child seat in the back, and is now the 20 year old owner/driver. Brings a bit of a tear.
Though low on power, idiosyncratic and finicky (it makes great whirring noises but the engine mounts must be made of Play-Doh), I love these cars. Was the model 90 ever available in the U.S? I'd still love to own an Aero/turbo or a 900 turbo convertible.
GL with the car. It doubtlessly will steal your heart and healthy chunks of your wallet.

Its annoying that there are no pre gm saabs in scrapyards anymore, I really want a 99/900 as a summer project. Unfortunately rust has got to most 1980's saabs by now so the ones that are left cost quite a bit, its cheaper to get a saab 9-5 nowdays then it is to get an old 900!
For all those wondering how much the b series saab engine can take, check this out, gt40 turbo and 9000rpm! 600 horsepower or so...

Slot a tuned 16v Turbo in it, sort the supension and add the rear ARB of a 900T16S (and only the rear one) to address the fore/aft balance - it will feel like a Pug 205 GTI afterwards - and leave it on the steelies for maximum sleeper value. Sorted
£999 sounds a bit steep though unless it's minter than mint.
A mate of mine had one in the same shade of Rose Quartz metallic that he bought off his granddad. He lowered it and put ARBs on and it was a right laugh although it would have been quicker around mini roundabouts if one could work the slow, non-assisted steering a bit faster. The arm twirling to get round was hilarious.

A shed isn't always a performance car, half the ones I used to write were barges.
We simply try to bring you interesting cars that are under £1000, ones that we think will interest anyone who loves cars. It's a tough feature to write believe it or not, as after around 3 or four years of sheds we have covered most (interesting) cars available for under a grand.
I have an old Merc 190E, not sporty in any way, but many PHers are interested in it. It's just one of those cars that make you go 'Hmmm, i'd forgotten about those'
Anyway, sooner or later you'll get a shed you like. In the meantime, we quite fancy this car ourselves.......

Not for a bag surely? It would have to be mint and with FSH to fetch anywhere near that - get yourself on the Saab fora and bag yourself a tidy one for anytihng between £200-500 if you must...900T-R said:

You'd have a hard time recovering any costs incurred beyond a tub of T-cut on this one. It may well be lovely but the market for it is simply, erm, limited.

Um, this is now a two owner car [and about to be three] with little service history and the seller is getting rid for no real reason = beware!! Offer £100 if you must have one, but why?? Nostalgia is not what it was and this SOTW proves it. Metro 6R4 anyone?

I quite like that 90. I never really understood why they were sold alongside the 900 and 99, but it looks like a nice example.
As for service history - IMHO not really worth worrying about on a car like that. A thorough look over and test drive should tell you all you need to. As long as the body is rust free everything else can be fixed or repaired for next to nothing.
I hope it doesn't get bought and hacked. The problem with classic Saabs is that they are cheap enough for people to do this and so good examples end of getting tatty.

Nice, but you would have to worried about "but have decided it's not for me".
Is that not code for - there is something wrong with this so I would like to get rid??
Yup, my thoughts too. Is that not code for - there is something wrong with this so I would like to get rid??
I like it so much though that I'm prepared to put the blinkers on and decide that if this replaced an Alfa then I'm not surprised it's not for him!
'with some time, work & a little money [you] can enjoy this "classic" Saab'

Granted, but a 90 for a grand should be the one you buy from an elderly couple who have always garaged it and had it dealer serviced all along, not one that's been run on a budget for a while and is being sold with the remark "well, with a little TLC..."
