As has been mentioned many times, crazy price for what is a nothing car-if it was a 99 or a T16 or maybe a convertible then maybe it would be worth the grand. But when £1000 will buy 9-5 V6's or at the other end of the time scale reasonable 96 V4's, why?
Agreed that 1k is strong money for one of these (although the low miles is a mitigating factor), a 99 turbo or T16 for this money will need work and chances are it will have been ragged. A good one of these would make a more sensible proposition as a daily driver. I'm sometimes tempted by a really good late 900 16v as a daily driver as they are so unloved. My dad had a really nice lemans blue one on an H but it looks like it was scrapped. His earlier 8v was on the road and insured until a year or so ago - they're worth so little that they just get scrapped if something simple like a HG goes.

If you are in the market for an interesting car like a 90, a 9-5 isn't even going to be on your radar, so not sure that comparison's useful!

I had this 900 T16VS last year: Sold it on Ebay for a paltry £800 with a long MOT. Insanely quick for 175bhp (in a straight line..) with the most godawful front seats. I kindof miss it

Hm, you must be the first one ever to complain about Saab seats... hehe I've had a layer of extra side bolstering put in mine as I couldn't bring myself to swap them for proper buckets (plus at 14 kgs each they weren't even that heavy)...

That's correct!..yes,....but from what I can tell this SOTW feature has been a feature for so long now that the Tons of 'better sheds' out there have probably already been featured,...and the Pistonheads staff are simply looking for cars they have not featured before,.....and so you get a-(very good example..smile) Saab 90.

+1

last time i checked this was Pistonheads, a site with the motto "speed matters"
as such surely the SOTW should be some sort of performance vehicle
I take your point,...but there are only 'so many' performance vehicles you can get for under a £1000,.....refer to my above post.

Plus although the Pistonheads motto is Speed Matters,...I would'nt take that too literally,...going from some of the Forums and awful-yuck 'each to there own' cars that have been featured on this site, I see it as more of a 'car enthusiasts' site..smile

If you want the full-on variety Aero....
Why on earth did they choose that heap when there is a turbo on their own site!
A Turbo has probably already been featured as a SOTW,...where as a 90 possibly hasn't..read-SOTW history.

Saying that if I was going to buy a Saab of this vintage I'd 'only' go for the Turbo variant...hehe..wobble..banghead..............getmecoat

Um, this is now a two owner car [and about to be three] with little service history and the seller is getting rid for no real reason = beware!! Offer £100 if you must have one, but why??
Methinks you are right. There's a subtl edifference between a shed and a pig in a poke/ bag of nails.

I say again, if there's minimal rust everything else can be sorted cheaply.

At 173k that aero is just run in, but the 90 for a grand is a laugh. The SOC used to have 99s advertised for free

Were they low miles 99s though? I would hazard that there might even be fewer 90s than 99s left now as well. Times change - things that were given away a few years ago might be sought after now.

Would anybody have imagined in the mid 80s that a Mk.1 Escort would change hands for a 5 figure sum?

Sorry, I just don't get this expression, are the bearings any different from any other car? is the turbo special, is it immune from wear and tear? No it isn't, I've had two 900 turbos and one 9000fpt and they wear just like anything else and a 173k 900 will have all the problems of any other car with a few of its own like drooping headlining, knackered seat heaters, blown cockpit lights and worn turbo

I like this car. It's worth a grand for the looks alone. So it won't go fast but then shouldn't have been ragged by a plethora of boy racers either. I'd be happy with that and also with the fact that it wasn't the sort of tat most people here like.

Pistonheads means a love of cars not just "fast" cars.

I'd love one of those, not as much as I would love a 99 though but they are almost too rare now. I still regret not buying a 5 door automatic 900 when I was 19.
I still regret selling my Saab 99 Turbo, but it was in such a state (rear suspension mounts rusted away) that it was too much of a hurdle to cross at the time.

Total classic Saab tally so far:

2 x 96 V4 saloon
1 x 99 combi coupe
1 x 99 turbo saloon
1 x 900 turbo automatic saloon
1 x 900i hatch
2 x 9000 hatch (second one ran to nearly 400k miles)
1 x 9000 CD saloon

Currently Saab-less, but the snow outside is making me think fondly of those heaters and that stability!

My first car was a 99 Super sport, twin weber carbs and torque steer like you've never seen... great fun for a 17 year old! biggrin

gave it to a mate in the end and he thrashed it to bits and seized the engine frown

Torque steer on 99s was often a result of the wishbone bolts working loose, followed by the camber adjustment shims falling out (yes, 99s had adjustable front camber, and yes mine fell out on one side...). That and shot dampers. With equal-length driveshafts, conventional torque steer was much less of a problem than on other cars of the era.
