Still look like a big TT to me just cant get excited about them in the same way as a Ferrari or a lambo.
sums up how i feel about them.

Its like whenever i see an evo... they are capable & fast but kinda obvious, safe and easy. a little bit yawn considering what else you could own in that league.

I guess it depends on what you buy a car for then. For me it's all about the driving experience when pushing on or on the track, and I know a 997 Turbo will deliver a better experience versus an R8.

Now, if I want something that everytime I stop for fuel people come over and ask me about my car then i'd get the R8. It certainly has road presence, and will turn heads in the executive car park.

I haven't driven an R8, but every journalist who has seems to think that you're wrong. GT3 may be another matter.

Its an Audi !!!!! My reps have audis if you are trying to turn heads in the exec car park then you certainly wouldnt but the audi would you ?

You would have to buy something aspirational and un obtainable

My other half had an R8 for a couple of day and all her friends thought it was a TT and her mx5 was much nicer !!!

However they thought the 2.7rs was something serious, the r8 is an S4 with a different body end of

What a bunch of po55ers we are on here !!

How about you throw in a brand new Aston Martin Vantage Roadster for £65k as a comparative too .... (see classifieds)

Gallardo 04 (no manufacturers warranty)
Audi R8 08 (2 yrs warranty)
AM Vantage 09 (3 yrs warranty)

A new engine for an out of warrantied Gallardo must be circa £20k - I know of 3 new engines in Gallardo's (albeit around 1 yr old and in warranty)

I'm not a badge snob, so not an issue for me. As far as most people in my office are concerned they couldn't tell the difference between a Cayman and a 997 Turbo.

Just arrived home in a R8 and would personally prefer to be in it more than any Gallardo (bar the SL or LP) and any 997 bar the GT3.

I enjoy 997 Turbos just for the huge boost but you can't use that 95% of the time, and personally much prefer the far better balanced Cayman S for that 95% of the time.

Would take a GT3 over any of them though. smile

Unfortunately Audi have made a beautiful car, electronically perfect but as is so often the case it lacks soul....something few German cars have ever had, and thus people do not want to keep long term such cars....look at M5 and M6 prices or SLK and CLK AMG prices....ouch.

Audi need to create a separate 'motorsport' identity, not an RS or even an R, but something like Toyota and Lexus or in the US Honda and Acura!

They also need to race the R8 possibly in a one make championship around the DTM or WTCC. If really brave a Procar type series across the US and Asia.
What is soul? Breaking down often with random problems?
If you don't understand theres no point in explaining.

Unfair comparison. Late 07 R8s are avaialble for sub-£60k. So now lets ask this question:-

04 Gallardo vs 07 R8, and you're doing more than 15k miles per year. Which would you choose?

But seriously if you er doing 15k and you are in this situation do you not have a 911 turbo / Range rover etc etc as well anyway ?
No, this is exactly the position I am currently in. Want one car that can do the commute plus work on the track and at the 'ring a few times a year, and not cost me the Earth to run.
How many people who actually own an R8/G will not own another car? Most will probably have at least 1 or 2 other cars if not more. How can you go shopping in a R8/G or pick up drop people off at the airport etc? Impossible.

Based on?

I did a big shop on the way home tonight and have done quite a few airport runs in R8s and Gallardos. There's a quite a bit of space behind the seats and the front luggage compartment, although not huge, is not far off a Vantage/911. Just don't go in for Samsonite cases. smile

Eventually you'll see Sub 35k gallardo's and sub 20k R8's I think this will be sometime in the next 5 years. No rationing or reason or personal experience of each car. Laugh at me all you want but watch the ads 5 years from now and enjoy supercar engineering for Subaru money.

Why on earth would you want to turn heads in a car park !!!

Anyone who says an R8 looks like a TT needs to have an eye test or they dont know diddly squat about cars , they are chalk and cheese

Great cars as the 911's are due to the sheer numbers that populate the streets at the moment they no longer have any real road presence. Most people would have a hard time identifying between a Boxster and a Turbo as one came down the road towards them. Now I do admit that some early examples are still head turners and much more desirable than the cars that have been produced in the last 8 years or so.

The Gallardo's forefeel that whole school boyish poster on the wall image but according to a straw pole of friends and colleagues still have a bit of the flash wide boy look.

I asked a couple of girlfriends what kind of person they felt would drive a Gallardo, and they both said that an owner would be more interested in impressing people than any thing else. They also felt they would be slightly immature.

Porsche drivers were classed as wanabees who got into Porsche ownership because it was seen as the next step up the ladder, one of friends made the comment that she felt they lacked imagination.

As for the Aston and the R8 they classed these drivers in the same light, they would be more mature, classier and more individual. These divers would not follow the herd.

Now these ladies are very successful and I have to say attractive women, one owns a PR company and drives DB9 and currently has an E-Type V12 convertible undergoing restoration and the other has an immaculate Ferrari 328.

Personally I don’t care about what other people think of the cars I drive but some people on hear obviously do. I am just grateful that I have a choice, and I chose the R8.

There are plenty of people who will still think you're a flash wker in an R8. Whatever you drive, someone somewhere thinks badly of you for it. I'd start worrying when I needed the opinion of some status-obsessed woman before I bought something.

I absolutely agree, you should drive what ever the hell you feel like and stick two fingers up to what ever other people think. My friends are not "status-obsessed", just a couple of successful female petrol heads who were recounting their anecdotal experiences with other car owners
