Does anyone know the weight difference between this and the M3 cabrio??
Car and Driver estimates the S5 cab weight to be 4,350 pounds but doesn't give any info on whether this is including driver etc. That's 1.97 tons, which is 350kg+ more than the coupe. Is that really likely? M3 has an unladen weight of 1,903 according to BMW. Even with 4wd, shouldn't the Audi be lighter?

Probably, but the S5 has a nice fat supercharger sat in the engine bay which probably will equal out with the diseisel.

Agree that the S5 is'only' a competitor for the 335i and we should wait for the RS5.But is it just me or does the whole A5 range punch above it's weight when it comes to perceived image. I was following a new shape CL and an S5 the other day and the Audi just looked the more prestigous car in every way-it didn't even look that much smaller. But then I think Skoda Superb's look like Flying Spur's,maybe Specsavers beckons!

The 3 Series (M3 included) doesn't work as a convertible in my opinion.

Cabriolets are about style, and that is where the 3 Series Cabrio fails it for me. There is absolutely no X Factor, no presence. If the S5 Cabrio was a warm summer Friday evening, then the 3 Series Cab would be a wet, cold Monday morning.

Whatever Trevor!

All Audi's are driven by c0ck5, it's been noted on Top Gear and therefore is a fact! :-)

Seriously though, what the hell is wrong with tail gating Audi drivers and Passat drivers, most idiotic people on the road.

BMW = Drivers car
Merc = Comfortable cruiser
Porsche = Best Sports Car
Audi = Just a posh VW (excl. R8)

M3 wins any day of the week and so does the 335.

With my most abject apologies, but I had to.

You seem to have forgotten about the number of 320ds on the road driven by bluetooth headset wearing salesmen. Why is that people with BMW diesels seem to want to take on all comers? The E92 320d and E46 are two of the worst driven cars on the road. It puts me off the BMW brand completely.

Also, please tell me when BMW make something as understated as the RS6 or A8... I suspect it will be some time.

Hahaha it's all good fun!

I personally think that Range Rovers are driven with the most care on the roads and that Porsche Cayenne's and Audi 'fun bus' are driven the worst. The X5's and ML's that I've seen over the years haven't caused any offence.

For a week solid of long distance driving I did recently, there was an idiot in a passat every day on different roads - seriously ridiculous driving, Gumball glamour in his mind in a VW estate on the M25, A3, M1 etc.

320d - I only know BMW drivers who go for the best :-)

Last BMW that has understated good looks (You can't tell me the R8 is understated? I do love it though!) - E30, M3, E36 M3, E46 M3, All M5's except the latest to name a few. There are no understated new Audi RS estates? In my opinion anyway - huge exhausts, massive wheel arches, usually bright blue, chrome everywhere and huge wheels. Usually driven by old men wearing Oakley eye jackets and said blue tooth pieces.

Why no photos with the hood up? Whilst most convertibles look good with the hood down, the trickier part of the design is to make it look good with the hood up in my view.

Good point, I prefer canvas roofs a la Aston, Rolls, < E46 3 series but then the Merc metal folding roofs look good and the new 3 series one doesn't.

I'd say that many repmobiles are driven badly; 3 series, A4's, Mondeos, Passats, the lot. I couldn't really say that I've ever noticed much difference between the way 4x4s are driven, but the wannabe rappers in Merc GLs, X5 4.6/4.8's, Cayennes and Rangies of all varieties tend to drive like n0bs, probably to a greater extent than Q7's, at least where I live in West London. One other thing which amazes me is the number of E46's I see where the bodykit has been nicked by some rudeboy (who probably drives like a dick) to put on his 318, such is a BMW driver's obsession with showing off ;-)

You can't tell me that any of the M3s have ever been understated (neither is an RS4, I grant you that), it's simply not true. The RS6 though is a different matter, it's much more subtle than an M5 (festooned with its meaningless wing vents and four exhausts, not to mention the arches you mentioned).

R8 is a different story, mid engined sports cars tend to be, see the BMW M1 concept.

Nice Clarkson paraphrasing by the way!

I drive both BMW and Audi (and Porsche)!

IMO Cocks and Good drivers drive all sorts.

Except for Toyota Land Cruisers - they are all tossers.

Couldn't agree more, after having owned and enjoyed both.

Land Cruisers.... in my experience they're often driven by people who run illegal chain gangs and cockel pickers. Same goes for imported Mitsubishi Shoguns.

Audi S5 Cabrio is a bigger car to BMW 3 series. I presumed any cars in comparison with the A5/S5 are likely to be compared with BMW 5 series and not BMW 3 series.
