America is a totally different country with large open expanse. Every car was big at the time and a lot still are, they just had bigger more powerful engines. It will probably sell well in that environment. So i don't see your point and stand by what i said.

You can dress it up as much as you like with words like showcase, engineering show piece etc. Ultimately in this country it will be bought by high earning urban dwellers on unsuitable roads trying to keep up with the Jones's. Rather sad if you ask me.

As per my numerous rants on the 5.0i X6 thread, this is a thoroughly stupid car which expresses perfectly all that's wrong with the German automotive industry at the moment. An M-Sport 4x4 which weighs two tons? Not an M-Sport as far as I'm concerned. Absolute nonsense and another reason for me to lose faith in what was formerly my favourite mainstream manufacturer.

I'm struggling to think of anything that burns less petrol than a Golf BlueMotion.
A Polo Bluemotion perhaps?

I think the point that BMW are trying to prove is that if you throw enough horsepower, rubber, brakes, electronic driving aids and trickery at a 2 tonne "car" you can make it go, stop and corner very fast indeed. Well done BMW, very well done indeed.

Colin Chapman will be turning in his grave.
First sentence - think you'll find both Audi and Mercedes lead that particular charge marginally more effectively! wink

Re CC - I wasn't aware he was a Prussian with a penchant for overweight men in leather getting haddocked to the sound of Lower Saxon Oompah percussion? hehe

No, I'df say they were the exact OPPOSITE of a car like an X6, muscle cars were meant to be performance cars for the blue-collar workers, and NOT status symbols for surburbanites.

The market for these cars must be tiny right now.... 911 money etc. Depreciation will be laughable. My local BMW (Elms Cambridge) is really struggling to keep afloat at the moment - they've even had to back out many supply committments with BMW just to stay viable. I can't see monster changing that situation.

When are we going to see some of the vast and unquestionable German engineering resources properly focused on smaller and more efficient fun? - talk about being behind the curve!

By the time they've finished trying to show who has the biggest German dick, they'll all be out of business.

Del...if BMW let M division do a serious version of an M6 CSL (and M3 for that matter) then Id be well and truely chuffed. Alas, lets be honest, if they did it wouldnt really be a CSL at all would it? It would be just another car targetted at accountants but with some funky sounding technology and pretensions of light weight. Id love to see BM have the balls of Merc and AMG in creating the Black but do it with a CSL series and stick to their principles.

Oh and then go and race them of course. Wtf wants to see 2ltr BMs racing when they have the basis of real cars to play with?

500BHP 2 seats, and -200KG M3 CSL and 600BHP 2 seats and -300KG M6 CSL.

Unfortunately they wouldnt sell nearly as many as if they just did the accountant version frown

Fair does , you are right the muscle cars were affordable for a larger proportion of the people than the X6 and the like are today

Heeey, Deejay, nice to have you back. beer

Just one fly in your ointment, I'm afraid, namely, that the M6 sold by the dribble: the bean counters of whom you speak are/were in Astons, Ferrari, Lambo and Maserati and Pork.

Only the true cognoscenti bought the M6. hehe

Anything that can be done to enhance it's searing repertoire could only be a +ve, sure but some bogusly ascribed pedigree, predicated upon some tenuous association to a particular race series, seems unimportant.

Re the Black, it's great, sure but don't get too carried away by Jezza's enthusiams, they are notoriously fickle and anyway, you rather overlook the fact of it's 50 kilo extra blubber o'er my beloved, supersvelte, uber GT of choice. wink

Trust me, you need some weight at colossal velocities, anyway.

P.S. Haven't you sorted out that F456 GT, yet? wink

Aha..Im aware of the weight issue with some of the Black stuff, hence why I said M division should stick to their principles, i.e. the lightweigth bit of the CSL nomenclature!

And bogus pedigree ascribred to a race series? Surely you jest Del? Alpina only have pedigree because they used to race. The CSL only has status because of Diester Quester and 3 wheels in the air. The M1 acquired mythical status due to Procar.

Oh and there are 3 Black cars Del old boy...of which the C class version is my least favourite.

Still no nearer on the Fezza front. This year is unfortunately already looking like a long slog of just paying off debts and replenishing savings after buying the house. Oh and going to Vienna. Bugger me but that place is expensive! Anyway, did you not see my Cobra thread the other week? Ive picked up a sudden irrational urge for a proper snake somehow, dont ask me why, never desired one before, but do now!

Deej-san, who mentioned Alpina?

Pedigree is just a word, the meaning of which may confer some notion of greatness in the automotive selections of certain nincompoopia but let's face it, I doubt carries much sway with the uber opinionated ranks of our eminent ilk, shirley? hehe

Alpina's racing record is of minimal interest but then, I'm probably something of a philistine when it comes to overdecalled, 30 year old 'Batmobiles,' et al.

Should that devalue the worth of a contemporary concept which for me, is the default image of a slightly eccentric (or at least very single minded) German who may or may not have a penchant for the odd tipple or three? To wit - http://www.alpinawein.de/

Er, anyway, your quest.

Now look, all this Cobra business: I'm sure it's very nice but you'll get a headache (or pneumonia) and for some reason, I have an image of you as a classically intolerant home counties bod, red of cheek and purple of fetlock, well read but boyishly compelled to suffer as we all do into the arms of internal combustion.

This what binds us and it's my job to ensure at this juncture you don't get all dewy eyed with one of the aforementioned (and completely misguided) 'notions of racing historique' and sully proceedings with a punt which we both know you will regeret once the hangover has worn orf.

Ergo, I honestly believe you are a 456 man - I can just feel it - yes, with a bit of tweed and a hamper in the boot, all the while cursing, probably provincial grunts like YT which is of course justifiable and done with such flair.

So isn't your R32 golf pointless? More power than you need in a country where you can only do 70mph?

Most quasi-offroaders are pointless. They pretend to do a lot of things while in fact being only a cock substitute and an obstacle on the road.
They pretend to be offroad 4x4s - which they're not and I'm sure people who own real 4x4s will agree that taking X5 or Cayenne off tarmac (stock one, not the specially modified Dakar ones) is like begging for a big bill (providing sport suspension will get you anywhere without being immediatelly stuck).
They pretend to be big, family cars but the only thing they offer is a big, difficult to park bulk. Most saloons, estates and all MPV are doing much better job at being "family friendly". PLus SUVs are big on the outside but not very big on the inside...
They pretend to be sporty but no matter what bhp you put in them it still has to handle over 2 tonnes of brick-shaped vehicle.
And, forget me for saying this, driving them is like driving a bus stop and I've driven XC90, Q7 and that Hyundai Santa-fe thing. Hardly any road feeling.
All you can do with an SUV is show off...
So called SUVs are marketing creation. Whoever managed to convince people to buy expensive cars that are not good at anything was a genious.

Really i don’t understand this hate for all urban SUV kinda cars. I have owned many different types and styles of car but currently drive a 57 plate X5 and love it. I didn’t buy it with going off road in mind as i live in a town and work in an office not on a farm, it’s easy to drive, easy to park and personally i think looks good, drives well and yes does give you a slightly arrogant feeling of I’m bigger than you on the road, but hay i like that.

As for the X6 i really like the way it looks, and anyway if we all bought cars for practical reasons or popular opinion and not personal preference how dull would the world be!

Didn't M-B recently claim that they would limit power to 450bhp on all models and try to focus on improving performance through lighter weight? About time!

Wish that was true but just think how many of those M-badged X5s and X6s will be used by moms on a school run. To them it's just another SUV.

As for penis-envy - sure you can say that about any sports car (and throw in middle age crysis for good measure) but the thing is that I'm rarely being pushed off the road by Ferrari or Porshe. Somehow it's always a 4x4 like Range Rover or X5.
