The Aston is a wonderful looking car and totally bonkers mad!.....EVERY Ferrari since the F355 has been just utterly, utterly pig ugly!!! This thing is just hideous!

Just looking at the profiles, I would say the Aston has the clumsier lines... Which bit is "bonkers mad"?

I'll take the Ferrari thanks and keep, what? £750K change?

Having seen one of these in black I would love one, pulling up with that long nose... cloud9

However.... I'd have a standard one, whether a girl would notice it or not, those seats are just well nerdy and a bit tacky. Also is it just me that isn't keen on that particular examples interior, I'd definately go for different colours!

Also think the current Ferraris tend to look better in darker colours, the 599 and F430 do without a doubt.

My favourite in the current range. 612 is too big and ugly, the 430 a poser's weekend car (my view - very capable though they are I'm sure..) I'll take one in black with tan leather, yellow rev counter and yellow calipers please.

And it can be second hand too...(have seen a few for less than £150k - as these tend to accumulate more miles than 430s etc..)

Congrats!! A much better article in terms of describing the actual driving experience than the PH norm!! Love the honesty, saying wait for it...the 599
doesn't have good feel. Most mags would never admit such thing.

One question, you write:
"With a modicum of talent 'though, the 599 HGTE is a remarkably rewarding, incisive and ridiculously capable car that’s able to carry speed where its obvious mid-engined rivals would be seriously out of their depth."

Which cars are you referring to here? The R8, the Gallardo?, the Cayman?
And in what way would these cars be out of "their depth" against the 599?
thanks, JL
Lets try this again....

That Aston make's the Ferrari look crude and a bit cheep!!!!!
I do like the sound of the 599 from the write up though.
(Probably as close as I'll ever get to owning one)cry

The rear quarter window on the Aston is terrible,

The wheels are from a BMW M3 (E46) in Essex,
http://www.virtual-showroom.co.uk/images/vehicles/...

The door slats/vents are from a Vet' Z06.

Ferrari all the way.

I think hes actually lying to readers on this one. This 599 would really leave a R8 v10 in its wake. Please. A what P$%y the author is for not bothering to respond. JL

Liking the 599 and interior.

However, how cheap and crap are the lock unlock buttons and plastic surround. And the ashtray. Very poor, very cheap and nasty, shoddy in car of this supposed calibre.

JL - The author of this article responds -

You quote me -

"the 599 HGTE is a remarkably rewarding, incisive and ridiculously capable car that’s able to carry speed where its obvious mid-engined rivals would be seriously out of their depth."

And say -

I think hes actually lying to readers on this one. This 599 would really leave a R8 v10 in its wake. Please. A what P$%y the author is for not bothering to respond. JL

I say -

You ask about the mid-engined rivals that I mention in my piece - note the word 'obvious' too. I was thinking specifically along the lines of the Lamborghini Murcie, but I'd also include other mid-engined machines like KZ1 and Zonda. You mention the R8 V10 and Cayman in an earlier post - both cars which would undoubtedly put up a good show, but exist in completely different price and power brackets so I wouldn't consider them 'obvious' rivals. I drove the R8 V10 only a few days after the 599, and while it wouldn't 'leave it in its wake' as you say, the Ferrari feels so much faster, more involving and interesting to drive. Moot point though as I don't consider it a rival.

To clarify - the Ferrari is so forgiving and exploitable that it'd likely leave behind a Murcielago on the challenging roads around Modena where I drove it. Like all writers I have to use a bit of creative licence in saying that - as I didn't have a Lambo to hand to compare directly at the time - but lying? I take my credibility as a journalist seriously and resent the implication.

Apologies for my late reply to your post - I've been out of the country covering various launches and haven't had the time to respond to your comments. Name calling? We're better than that here are we not?

Best,

Kyle

Kyle,
I am sorry to have called you anything negative. Indeed I did not give you enough time to respond. But just to give you an idea of where my thinking was, vis a vis you....usually on PH when you post something if you don't get a response within a day or two or three, then what happens is the post gets so far from the top, until its many many pages from anyones ability to sensibly click; such that no one bothers to look for it ever again. And so that was part of my frustration as well, that there is no way on this site, nor most others, to keep a valid question alive let alone get answers for more than a very few days.

Also what is frustrating is the lack of any e-mail to contact any such author-such as yourself directly to even let them know there are good questions regarding their story.

Last, I thank you for clarifying your position on the mid vs front-mid debate. Indeed I truly thought a car like the new V10 R8 would have been a competitor in the eyes of many high performance drivers. However I too see the "obvious" point that many people for who shop by prestige, and money would be looking strictly in the price bracket.

The only issue, I'll take with you about this newly fettled 599 is the idea of involvement... I know a few people who have driven these and I have never heard anyone say the steering feel was very good on them. I assume this car is no where near the standard bearers for steering feel, such as 911's, Cayman, BMW E30 M3, Lotus Elise, Zonda etc. I think you would agree. Also last still is not the 599 too wide and heavy in many ways. Just take a look at a recent Autocar video comparing the new Focus RS with the GT-R and they too get into this issue of big cars being just too big for many roads...
http://www.autocar.co.uk/VideosWallpapers/Videos.a...
what do you think would a new 599 still be just as cumbersome as the GT-R was felt to be. Maybe its time to start dreaming of smaller supercars?
thanks, JL

Steering? See the piece -

'There’s still very little in the way of real feel through the chunky rim, but turning the steering wheel results in the 599 changing direction like something with a quarter of its mass.'

No standard bearer for feel then, but it steers impressively despite being short on real 'feel'.

Yup, it's big, but it was remarkably useful on the tight, twisty roads around Maranello. No different to the many roads in the UK - except the locals are probably a bit more used to meeting a Ferrari being driven quickly the opposite way.

I'd suggest that all cars, be it flagship V12 supercars, the GT-R or even things like the new Golf GTI are all too big (and too fast, competent and grippy) to really be enjoyed on UK roads. Which is why I've got a 205 GTI in my garage...

Seems like the worst part about owning a new Ferrari would be being bored sensless by R8/Corvette/Gallardo etc. etc. etc. boring you sensless everytime you stop for petrol informing you how their car is better.

With the HGTE pack fitted .. Can young Portugese drivers make it through Manchester tunnels without crashing into the wall..?
