Which proves exactly the point that the GTi has become purely a marketing exercise. The Mk5 addressed this, by all accounts the Mk6 has reverted to the Mk3/Mk4 badged up special.

I bet the bd thing doesn't even cock its rear wheel into roundabouts..
I feel the same way, i currently own mk2 golfs and have driven mk3 -mk4 and been underwhelmed, although from what i understand the mk5 was spectacular to drive compared to the 3 and 4 so i want to get my hands on one!

I really want to like the mk6, it looks special and maintains a lot of the classic design features which made the mk1 and mk2 so memorable but i cant help but feel that by reverting back to mk4 style rear suspension as obosed to the independent set up the mk5 had VW have taken a huge backward step!!

Spec it properly and it's £30k......FFS........

A lightly used 8P S3/3.2 or MkV R32/GTi the way to go perhaps.
The car costs 22k! Who specs a Golf with 8k's worth of extras and calls that sensible.

There is a fair amount of gumph spoken here. VW are due to release an R20T which will have 260bhp which will then take on the likes of the S3, hot meganes etc.

The GTi is expensive but as an overall cost against something like an A3 or Focus ST they will be the same.

Very true, perhaps the current generation of VW engineers need to go for a drive in a mk2 16v before they create the mk7!

I'm suprised by this review as I have read many other reviews praising it, can I ask how long Pistonheads drove it for?

Indeed the Top Gear review and another (publication is on the top of my tongue/fingers) were very favourable and said that whilst at first it feels dull that once you drive it for a bit and get in tune with it it has a sense of fun and that it IS a blast to drive and has a very good chassis and feel as well as being the understated classy every day car.

P.S Top Gear mentioned cocking the rear wheel when hooning it was most definately possible and they did it a few times.

We had the UK car for 7 days and also spent two days with it in Europe a few weeks ago smile

This is good news!! smile Hopefully if the MK6 is a bit lame then it should help prop-up the value of my year old MK5 Gti.

Happy days. smile

"VW has developed what it calls a ‘sound generator’, which is a device situated on the engine side of the bulkhead that receives signals from the engine management system to produce an ‘authentic’ sound track during spirited driving"

Is that for real???
This technology has been around for years, I owned a fire engine and a ferrari 308 about 25 years ago which had this system installed. You just press a button and the cars make "authentic engine noises". I think the VW engineers have been spening too much time in Toy's r Us!

Even after a good few hundred miles behind the wheel (plus a blast around the Millbrook hill route that Garlick didn't mention) I still didn't click with it, I'm afraid.

Sure, it has a sense of fun, but I don't reckon it has enough of one. I've honestly enjoyed myself more in most other hot hatches. Roll on the Scirocco R20...

Alas, the only way of evaluating a car is to drive it yourself or read about in a magazine after its production run has ended - then all of a sudden, the truth tends to bubble to the surface when there isn't a risk of annoying the offending manufacturer's marketing department.

Based on personal experience VW did a good job with the MkI and MkII Golf GTI platforms - but that was it. Every other subsequent Golf has been a deeply disappointing dullard, which is often why you get all that dross about residuals and them being a great car with which to live. You have to read between the lines.

Try as they might to woo you with soft-touch plastics, sexy instrument illumination or perceived build, that all evaporates when they start to rattle. And by then, you'll have long since fallen out of love with the way the wretched turd drives.

I must admit i quite like the look of it having seen it at the VW dealership,i was looking to replace our family car with something a little smaller than our E Class diesel estate,my wife wants a smaller car too now the kids don't need the double buggy!

To spec the car as we wanted it,i nearly fell over at £34k!...£34k for a Golf!!

if only they made the Focus RS 5dr and with DSG...maybe i need to look at the 130i BMW

Back to the drawing board or we will keep our Merc me thinks.

Seems very expensive new for a 208ps car. No doubt there will be many 'special editions' with progressively increasing horsepower and price.

What spec would that be then? Configuring the car on the VW website, the maximum possible price is £33k, and you'd have to be crazy to choose every single option on the list.

I agree that it's not cheap, but I think some people are getting carried away.

Why did they bother?

The MK5 lived a short life so the MK6 was brought forward (so I'm told) and this looks much worse.

The Scirroco is so competitively priced that nobody will bother with this unless they need the more door for work.

Onto the MK7 then...

I'm not to sure what it is about this car, but the New Mk6 GTi look more like an updated Mk4 Golf GTI then an upgrade from the Mk5.

... and whilst everyone else is moaning, what the hell is it with siamese tailpipes on everything these days. Golf GTI's should have twin exhausts, with those pipes it looks like a bloody like a wheelbarrow.

I'm sure i wouldn't say no if someone gave it to me, and having a VW badge on the front it'll sell like hotcakes no matter what.

Garlick et al, thanks for your reply, I wasn't for one moment questioning your review or anything, it was just a suprise considering the favourable reviews I had read before... As luck would have it I saw a headline on Autocar earlier about the Mk6 questioning if it was as loveable as the mk5, typical timing! laugh Though I didnt have time to read the article to find out what the verdict was.

You clearly gave it a very thorough testing anyway, roll on the Scirocco R20 indeed smile
