Horses for course, but take it from one who's tried - you can't make a mint 190E out of a st one for £5k.I overhauled my mint 86 example one winter - just 64k on the dial - and spaffed nearly 10k doing it right.
The Evo I & II are comparable to the very late Evo II and Evo Sport M3s.
How quick are the 190 Evos compared to the standard Cossie ones?
Completely different animal - they're pure homologation specials and the differences to the base car akin to the difference between the quattro and Sport quattro.
The Merc was £55k brand new against £34.5k for the BM

Bargain...... if all it needs is ticket and tax.
Hmm.. Surely if that were all it needed.. The owner would do just that, then sell it for a fair wedge more cash? So either something expensive and undeclared is wrong with it. Or the owner is so broke they cant even afford to MOT and slap 6 months tax on it? And im not sure it's the latter..P,
The enquiry is complete

One thing in the Merc's favour is that you can still buy every single part over the counter from MB main dealer, except the RHD exhaust manifold.Edited by Dunk76 on Friday 3rd July 14:41
and on this cosworth....parts will be more than just difficult to get hold of....

Seriously, you can literally buy any Mercedes from 1955 onwards, in component form, over the counter of any main dealer.

It is a little more difficult with this particular Merc though, I've had some difficulty in finding a number of parts for mine, including one that I need to get it working again. Plus if the part you need is in stock at an MB dealer, you are well and truly raped on the price most of the time. The above comment is mostly true, it just doesn't apply to the more specialised models.Edited by Dunk76 on Saturday 4th July 13:27
In the normal SOTW tradition, here's my shed:
I renovated the paint with a rotary buffer over the winter and it came out really well
I was at Bedford GT circuit with it on Monday. Me and a friend in his Elise Sport 190 decided to go out in convoy, him following me with his camera running. Naturally for this I gave it my all, and he told me he was really impressed by the pace and how hard he had to work to come past. I found that a little surprising especially as he uses cut slicks. Maybe he was just being nice, I haven't seen the video yet!
I wouldn't take on this SOTW unless you're mechanically minded. Starting/idling problems and running problems are very common. Why, I don't know as the injection is all but identical to all other Mercs of the era running around in third world countries, but just seems to be more problematic here. The 2.5 has self-diagnosis which is some help. At least they don't tend to break down completely do you'll be unlucky to ever be stranded. They do rust, all of them, and this may be quite bad, take a look at this one for what to avoid: http://s14.zetaboards.com/mercedes_190_club/topic/...
It is a fantastic handler when you're in the mood it has to be said. I find it a bit uncouth or even agricultural when you're just driving slowly and in traffic. Also the seats look good but don't support me in the bends enough. Some recents costs for mine: front pads £24, a 2.5-specific exhaust clamp £2.10, a self levelling suspension adjustment rod £27, and 4 injectors £73. Not sure what such items cost on m3s or m5s but I bet it's a bit more. A few parts I know are frighteningly expensive, the worst I reckon is an ignition computer being £950, but as far as I'm aware the cost is reflected in the quality and they don't tend to fail. '80s-era German stuff . I guess you'd have to buy the SOTW for parts if you needed one of those expensive bits, or just scrap the Bosch and convert to EFi! Fuel consumption is decent, 28.8mpg last time I measured while commuting, and mine's a 2.5. I have heard this is because the cosworth design and bosch injection are actually very efficient. Also a plus when filling up is that it is designed for 95RON.
I have certainly spent four figures on mine over 3 years, so would expect to spend some time/money on this cheap example. The crappy issue I find is nuts/bolts being rusted and needing a professional to get them undone which is a real pain. Stupid because although the parts can be cheap, fitting them can be a pain in the arse. I'm thinking of selling mine as I don't want to end up with it forever and fancy something new..

A neighbor has one of these, it makes me salivate a bit every time I look at it. Great choice for SOTW even if it takes an extra 5000 quid to get it back into proper order, and possibly thousands more to keep it that way. Owning a high point in Mercedes history is worth the dosh if you've got it.
