RE: 1150bhp RS200 Guns For Pikes Peak Record

When you consider the grip levels available, is it really necessary to have 1150Hp?? As the above post points out, the Rohrl car had around 600hp. I watched the x7 clip posted earlier in the thread and I think having the aero package and suspension sorted would be the ticket. I mean, NOs? Really? Colin Chapman and I don't subscribe to the Yank doctrine of "more cubes!" Sure, the car needs plenty of Hp but the power needs to be tractable. I do love the RS200 though and I'd dearly like to see them get the record
Much of the lower is tarmac, where 1150bhp should prove handy. At higher altitudes, the power drops quite a bit (have a look on the internet to see how much by) so yes, it probably is necessary. Tajimas car has around 1000bhp I think. Edited by Fresh_Clip on Thursday 16th July 02:13
Tajima's Suzuki has around 1000bhp, Millen's Celica which held the previous recrod for 13 years had 950. They wouldn't have that level of power if it didn't make a difference.
Its worth remembering while they may make that power at the bottom of the hill it'll be less at the top due to the lack of oxygen at that altitude - I think the nitrous is being used to try and compensate for that in the upper part of the run.
Beaten to it!

It worked for WW2 fighter aircraft! the German ME109s had to run it to chase the Spitfire Recon planes (fully striped of guns and alot of the armor to really lighten the aircraft. Plus the merlins/grifith engines produced alot more power). Some of the drives use O2 towards the top of the hill. i think i would just use the N2O! lol

Is that 1,150bhp from 2 litres? That's incredible, that's 4.6 times the specific output of a Veryon.
The Pikes Peak Escudo was the best car in Gran Turismo 2, I got over 300mph out of it on the test track.
Good Luck guys, be great for the RS200 to win it, what a legend!

The new engine is a 2.4.

+1, if you like that T in 24, and like dirt, buy "From Dust to Glory" a very similar doc about the Baja 1000 (another one of those glorious anacarchanism (or however you spell it), Superb, but you'll probably have to import it. I did. Carrera Panamerica there's another.. .
Great recommendation: but I already own it! Its a little Americanised in parts, but "Dust to Glory" still rates as once of the best motorsport documentaries I've seen in the last few years (alongside "Faster" and "Truth in 24"). The event itself (the Baja 1000) is brilliant as well. I brought it from a seller on Amazon.com. The DVD plus shipping came to less than £5 - bargain! I'd recommend it to any rally fan - especially as a lot of people haven't even heard of the Baja 1000.

Must admit Id be suprised if they took the record. I simply think they have the wrong car for the job.
i would love to know what cars you think would do the job better. please enlighten me.Still, its the Peak and more than anything else the weather will play its part in determining if they have a shot or not. I will be suprised if they take the record.
so are you saying a spaceframe type car would be best?
Would you like to be a little more vague?
Take RM's various motors, take the Escudo thingy. We are talking specifically tailored vehicles, very heavily modified on more modern platforms using more modern tech than the RS200. The only bang upto date aspect of the car are the Avon tyres.
The type of car is largely irrelevent to my point, which was that as my starting point to crack the current record I wouldnt be starting with a platform that is 25yrs old.

IF they manage to get that out of date Ford based four-banger power plant from the bottom to the top of that mountain in one piece whilst it's delivering that level of output, then regardless of the time posted they deserve a bloody medal!
Whats it look like. This medal thing....JamesK said:
So am I the only one who doesn't want Walter's record to get broken by a Ford with twice as much power then?
British engineered, British driver serious record attempt at one of the - if not the - the most formidable hill climb courses in the world.article said:
The car, driven by former double British Rallycross champ Mark Rennison, is gunning for current record holder Nobuhiro ‘Monster’ Tajima, who set a time of 10m 01.408s back in 2007 at the wheel of a 1000bhp Suzuki XL7.
Even if it was old Wally's record, I'd still be down for these guys blowing it out of the water.Just my thoughts.
ETA: just been reading up on Pikes Peak. There's an open wheeled division? Anyone know anything about this? Shirley they have to be slightly more "robust" than the type of things you would see at Fintray/Doune etc?

Not the RS200, but that's also not the way to "place" the Fiesta...

Good luck to them, hope they do it.
Good luck for the future also to another group of Brits with a record attempt - Richard Noble, Andy Green and Bloodhound SSC

Third unlimited car breaks down in practice
Marcus Grönholm of Finland had just finished the third and final practice run Friday when his 2010 Ford Fiesta suddenly overheated and stalled near George’s Corner on the Pikes Peak highway.
“We’ll find out what happened,” he said. “Everything was fine beforehand.”
The breakdown leaves only defending champion Nobihuro “Monster” Tajima with nine uneventful practice runs headed into Sunday’s Hill Climb.
Andreas Eriksson of Sweden was sidelined by unfinished body work remaining for his Fiesta, which he rolled in practice Thursday.
Engine parts for Mark Rennison’s 1984 Ford RS200 arrived in Denver on Thursday night and were scheduled to be installed Friday. The Englishman’s engine broke down early Wednesday.
Race director Phil Layton said all four entries should be ready to compete Sunday morning.
Let's hope that last comment comes true
