I'm having to get some new front tyres fitted at the last minute, and all I can seem to get hold of today is rubber from a company called Maxxis. Not really heard much about them, does anyone know if they're any good? Currently have Falken FK452s on the rear and the ones that need replacing are Dunlop Sport Maxx. Only other option is Continentals, but I'd be spending an extra £40 a corner.
Any help much appreciated

Well regarded in mountain biking circles, not that that really helps much.

Interesting review here.

Mid-range results, but they're cheap I think?

They are indeed quite cheap, £63 for 235 40 17 as opposed to £100 for the Contis which is the only other boot I can get fitted today. I was after mid range anyway, would like premium but my budget won't allow that unfortunately. Decided to go for the Maxxis as that Autoexpress test suggests they're on the same sort of level as Kumhos which was the sort of thing I was looking for anyway

American company I believe, same sort of market as Kumho/Hankook etc.

Have them on my vectra, fitted by the dealer I bought it off when it failed the pre-delivery MOT before delivery. Not too bad in the dry, pretty useless in wet conditions. They are the poncey, fashion tread type though.

Got some on the front of my 306, they are fine for budget tyres.

I know someone that had these fitted to a MK1 Focus.

Gripped like a basterd in the dry, but in the wet, well lets just say the drive was erm... entertaining! rotate

Not that it helps much but in mountain biking they make the best tyres.

That was what I was hoping to do, but all I could get fitted the same day where either these or the Contis. Pretty much everyone I rang only had the Maxxis available today, and as I'm off to France tomorrow I couldn't really wait. I had called somewhere yesterday that were supposed to be getting something in for me today but that didn't happen in the end.

Anyways thanks for all your input (apart from the people talking about mountain bikes tongue out) I had the Maxxis fitted about an hour ago. Time will tell as to whether or not they're any good!

Not just mountain bikes - Maxxis tyres are getting decent reviews for their motorbike tyres too. Again, not the best tyres in their field, but very good value for money.

They are a Taiwanese company BTW, not American.

The new name for Chen Shin. Which will bring back some shudders and bad memories for anyone running a motorbike on a budget in the 80s and early 90s.

However.... they've got their act together and are punting out some pretty decent and very well priced stuff these days.

On the other hand, they're priced to compete with Marangoni, who are a recognised sub-premium brand in Europe and are definitely worth looking at.

(I run Marangonis on my 75 track toy)
