I had a 1984 80 quattro B2 5 cylinder 8 years ago - B49KPE - It was in silver wih full black leather, subtley lowered with RH Cups. The chap I bought it from in Brackley worked at GTi Engineering and the car had been mildly breathed upon, putting about around 160bhp. Then my drunken girlfriend swiped my keys out of my jacket pocket and went joyriding in it and wrote it off.. It wasn't all doom and gloom however, as Keith from Audi4U managed to salvage it from my insurance company and put the engine into his rally car.
It was definitely my most favourite car I have owned and would not hesitate to buy another if I could find one.

I had one of these as a loan car in 1984, fern green with sliding roof and electric windows. My Cavalier was having the gearbox replaced. Albeit just a three box saloon people commented on it and it was fun to drive and felt really solid.

Absolutely - I was fortunate enough to enjoy the two predecessors, the Audi 80GT from 1974 (source of the original Golf Gti engine!) & then the 80 GTE in 1976 - two of the finest cars I have owned. These lightweight cars were pitched well against the BMW 2002 & the tii.

Don't forget the Audi 80 GLE, which had the 1.6 injection engine from the Golf, but quickly got replaced with the 80CD with 5 cylinders. These were actually pretty quick at the time, certainly in XR3 territory.

Weren't the 5 cylinder ones the 90?

My Dad had a white 90CD (5 pot, front wheel drive) on a C plate.
He hated it.
hehe

It's still showing as for sale, I though someone would have bought it by now.

I thought SOTW was about nostalgia, unwarranted eulogy and not putting your hand in your pocket for some clapped out piece of junk. wink

Amazing cars these, esp as it's a pre=facelift with the narrower rear. From C-reg, it got a bit bloatier and ruined the lines.

I had one about 10 years ago, in white. Mintier than a mint thing. The owner had accidentally filled it with diesel, and it had langushed in his front garden for about a year. I handed over £150, drained the tank, filled it with 4-star, cleaned the plugs, and it fired right up. Needed new tyres and some bulbs for MOT. Sold it after a year of fun filled motoring for £695.

It's WELL worth the £1000, tidy GL models fetch upper £800s

Top cars. I have vague memories of my Dad test driving one when we had a GTI and I seem to recall it felt quicker due to lower gear ratios?

Disclaimer: The above might be crap. Apart from the 'Top cars' point.

The 5 cylinder ones were badged as 80's till 1984 (quattro and CD had the 5 pot engine, although some quattro's also had the 1.8 4 pot engine).
The 80 got a facelift in '84 and the ones with the 5 pot lump were badged up as a 90.

Cracking car and worth the money. My wife drives a 1986 80 sport as her daily, and I drive an '87 100 sport as mine.
Parts availability is pretty dire to be fair. Ours was off the road for 5 weeks earlier this year trying to source a new front screen for it.

If anyone has an interest in these cars then there's plenty of owners over on www.classic-audi.co.uk and also people who have a few 'spares' cars.
Which is pretty useful given the lack of via Audi.

think the gti engines in these were tuned more for torque rather than outright power.

That is indeed right Coxy - my friend had a Y-reg 80CD - nice 'burbly' 5-pot noise. When the exhaust went it sounded like a proper works Quattro - it was reasonably quick in the mid 80s but the steering was extremely light even for a PAS system. Still, had plenty of fun in it.... smile

He's got the later 20 valve 90 quattro now

Last 80 Sports I saw were one at the the Breakfast Club and a ropey white one down in Ironbridge

Some nice Audi 80/90s at the Breakfast Club this morning including a nice white 80 Sport with a subtle Tim Stiles Racing badge
