Opening me up to some pretty serious piss taking for being a dumb arse but if it did a million miles on a rolling road, I wonder how many sets of boots it went through?
they would have been moving on the rollers right?

And if it had been fitted with wings.......they would have been moving on the rollers right?

I have run load of high mileage BMWs. Pick cars that have just sat on the motor way with a full main agent history.
Agreed - my C43 did 90K motorway miles in 3 years, on lease from Merc and with full MercSH. Has now done 135K, cliche I know but really does still feel like a 40K mile car.I'm going the Specialist route for servicing now, not scrimping but I can't see why it shouldn't give me the 40K miles I'll do in the next 2 years with minimal depreciation. All for less than half what a stbox Corsa costs new.

"A million miles is a long way. It will get you to the moon and back a little over four times."
<Pedant>
Erm, actually it's only twice as it's 244,040 miles to the moon
</Pedant>
Isn't that 4 times, as it is less than 250k?<Pedant>

250 x 4 = 1 000 000

fking hell lads... You all need to get laid.
Poor Riggers won't even want to bother next time.
1'000'000 miles on rollers with nice clean air and no other real world elements? To be utterly honest, if this is the quality of stories that we are party to then I for one would rather he didn't next time. Blatant plug for Mobil if you ask me.Poor Riggers won't even want to bother next time.
Now, just who do I speak to about getting the last 5 minutes of my life back?

Just making the point that the story was a little pointless. Is it too much to ask that we have stories that actually relate to reality? We could all run a car for a large amount of unstressed miles on the rollers, it just smells a little of 'buy mobil oil' and has a misleading buy-line when there are a good few 'real' million mile cars out there.
Not criticizing Riggers and no offense to the dude (we all know that stories equal wages), but it's lazy / tokenistic journalism which is a little insulting to the reader on the part of Haymarket.

"a million miles in lab conditions isn't exactly representative of the wear and tear that a car goes through during its lifetime"
As much as anything, I also thought it was interesting to see what an effectively factory-fresh E30 felt like (being no more than a nipper when the car was in BMW showrooms) compared with more modern BMWs.
Still, I appreciate your candour, munk.

I think its a remarkable achievement personally. Yes the wear and tear on the rest of the car is not genuine as there are no pot holes or idiots that pull out on you at high speed on the rollers but they are not talking about the rest of the car. This is an advert/promo exercise for Mobile 1 oils not BMW suspension components.
But the wear and tear on the engine isn't 'genuine' either. The vast majority of engine wear is starting from cold. I bet most car engines, with any brand oil, would happily replicate this achievement.Jgtv said:

Interesting question, and would the roller get covered in rubber too?they would have been moving on the rollers right?

There are dynos which attach to the wheel hubs though...
I'm sure I read an article Clarkson had written quite a few years ago which was in one of his books, when he drove an airport hire E30 325i auto cab which had covered a true million miles. He said the seat was a bit shagged but it still pulled cleanly to the red line. Don't the manufacturers absolutely hammer pre-production models in testing before they are released too? I'm sure when the original Jag XK8's came out they did a million miles in a combination of arctic and desert conditions. Now thats impressive.
oh dear, oh dear, oh dear what is it about discussion forums thats turns big hardy motor enthusiast men into bunches of bickering bhy old women!
take Mr.Insight for example, "a con?" and what do you drive? a subarau, a ford, i know, i bet its something french, a peugeot or citreon? maybe, did you read the article properly, incase you didn't i copied and pasted a section for you to read again -
"Where they ran it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For four years!"
one more time cos i can't quite believe it myself...
"Where they ran it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For four years!"
would your subaru or ford be able to boast the same, i doubt it!
i've had one e36 320i, one e46 330d and four e30's, 3 of which have been 325's and i can hand on my heart say they truely are incredible cars, any of you out there slagging them off on this discussion forum clearly have never owned a bmw, its about time you bought yourselves one and got over the jelous stigmata that they're expensive to buy and run and go get yourselves one, after all they are quite simply one of the best cars on the road!
ps. i'm glad they finally set the poor thing free, i hate seeing a bmw in captivity!
