RE: Honda Civic Type R Mugen Driven
Discussion
Power isn't everything. If they only need to sell a few units the business case might just make sense if they can get the price closer to £25k. Given the choice between a CTR with Mugen suspension, brakes and the uprated engine or a Focus RS I would take the CTR. I find torque boring so the prospect of nearly 9000rpm and a world class gearbox more than compensates for less straight line speed. Unfortunately I fear that the residuals of the Mugen won't be anywhere close to those of the RS so it is going to be very difficult to justify the massive premium over the heavily discounted standard CTR.
This car is going to have a very, very niche market.

torque is up 14lb ft to a respectable (for a VTEC unit) 162lb ft
For a naturally aspirated 2 litre road car engine, 162lb ft is pretty respectable full stop. It's just very different to delivering 237bhp by generating 237lb ft at 5250rpm. No torque, and no torque at low revs are not the same thing...Gsink said:
Even if they did drop the price how could it possibly compete with the focus rs, its well down on power??
Yes, but the Focus RS weighs more than my house. The book stats on the Focus put it only 0.06s faster to 60 than a DC5 Integra which only has 216bhp and probably weighs more than this Mugen as it has back seats etc. I have a lot of respect for the RS and its engine, but Ford dropped the ball by chasing headline bhp figures and luxury at the expensive of weight and, ultimately, speed. I'd be surprised if this wasn't faster to 60 than a Focus RS. Still not £30k worth of car though.Come on! Braking during an off camber bend with a bump in the middle, and by the look of the photos in the wet too.....If the rear end doesn't get loose there it won't anywhere and shows the car must feature the same non-adjustable 'safe' boring handling of the standard car.
That the FD2's rear end slipped wide there shows it must remain the more neutral handling (i.e better) car in most other situations. Yet this point was taken as a plus point for the Mugen?!
This looks like a missed opportunity and a marketing exercise only

IMO this is the engine that the original/normal FN2 should have had (240PS was already available in the ten year old S2000).
Brakes are definately a welcome upgrade as so many manufacturers of 200bhp+ cars stick crappy large single piston brakes on, and think that will do (new Mk2 Focus RS, and plenty of BMWs).
My only issue would be that I buy a hatchback for practicality and so rear seats are a must. If I only needed two seats I'd buy a coupé...
