SOTW: Audi 200 Turbo

Vorsprung durch... absolutely no history whatsoever

This week's Shed is a bargain-basement affair even by our usual deeply subterranean standards. For a little more than a monkey, this Audi 200 - the upmarket version of that pioneer of 1980s aero-chic the Audi 100 - could be sitting proudly on your driveway.

For your money, you'll get 2.1-litres-worth of characterful, turbocharged in-line five. Assuming that not too many horses have bolted from beneath that determinedly flat Kraftwerk-minimalist bonnet, this should translate to 180bhp, a theoretical 0-60mph time of 8.2sec and an equally theoretical top speed of 143mph.

Okay, so it's wrong-wheel drive rather than all-wheel drive and there's an automatic gearbox present to frustrate your progress but, whichever way you cut it, that's a lot of performance for your money - especially in such a large car.

Oh, and there's one other slight 'quirk' to this particular machine. We were so intrigued by this 107k motor that we gave the vendor a bell to find out a bit more. As the advert says, he's owned it for 20 years so it would be reasonable to think he must have a whiole wad of bills and general history to go with it. Hmm... Turns out our Audi 200 man is a farmer, and the 200 Turbo's servicing and mechanical work has been done by one of the chaps who works down on the farm.

Which, we have to say, did put us chickens off a bit. Still, it's perfectly possible that said horny-handed son of toil is an expert in Massey Fergusons, Case New Holland combines and, er, turbocharged Audis.

So if you're feeling braver than us and fancy a punt on an agriculturally-maintained Ingolstadt cruiser, check out the full advert below.

1984 Audi 200 Turbo, in good condition throughout. MOT.
White with black leather interior.
107,000 miles
Owned by me for 20 years.
Location - 3 miles from J9 on M25 in Surrey.
Sadly car has to go as I need the space.
Reduced price - must go!

£575

Farm maintained, always the best. Do you think it got a valet at the service?

I can see that ending up as an engine donor for an UR Quattro replica, no mention of MOT.

Thats barely run in for an Audi! Well priced too, considering it won't (or shouldn't) go wrong!

Woo hoo a turbo barge, i like that!!!

Surely for that money it would be a excellent donor for someone with a Coupe/saloon!?

The archive shot looks like the facelift version rather than the one in the advert.

Looks great but, as you say, I'd tread carefully. If there's any one who knows when to get rid of some machinery just before an expensive bill is about to appear it's a farmer. I'd ask to have a chat with the guy who did the work and ask him what he's done (or not).

So if I was a pedantic I would point out that its actually got quite a lot of history just none of it documented.

But I’m not so, bet he would through in some straw if you haggeled hard.

'Sadly car has to go as I need the space.' - He lives on a farm, how much space does he need, you wouldnt be able to raise a heffer on an audi 200 sized piece of land!!

My old volvo estate was owned by a farmer, for some reason he drove it all the way up from devon to part ex it at a Kia garage in Stafford!

It was bloody filthy, but after a good valet, my estate is still going nearly 4 years on!

With the exception of the Alfa last week, almost of all the sheds seem to be boring German barges, apart from that 325i Estate

Point taken - but you keep scaring me off thoroughly tempting sheds with the memory of the 420 SE saga...
