These cars represent what Audi used to be about, kind of a german Volvo with a bit more cachet and style, they were sensible, robust, stylish in a subtle way, reasonably quick, innovative and innofensive, they were driven by middle class types who couldnt quite accept Volvo or Saab ownership, never mind BMW's developing Yuppie image.
Contrast with some of the shouty ignorant cocks ((c) J clarkson 2007) that they seem to attract these days, all S lined up with 19 inch alloys and LED running lights, massive TAG watch glinting sat in the outside lane of the motorway on the way to the sales meeting with all 140 diesely bhp being unleashed, grimacing as their spine is pummeled by their suspensionless vehicle, angrily flashing the now humbled BMW drivers out of the way, trying to remember which shade of silver their car is out of the 236 different words Audi have for Silver (like eskimo's and snow), sat in the glow of the sat nav screen which is the only light source in the unremittingly dark place they call an interior, in physics there is the Black Hole as a concept, and Audi Interior these days is the slightly up market "Black Leather Hole", all light is devoured. they dream at night of rash overtakes, bad parking, tailgating and opportunities they can use to bore any dinner party guest stless about fuel economy.
More or less what I was about to say...But better written.Contrast with some of the shouty ignorant cocks ((c) J clarkson 2007) that they seem to attract these days, all S lined up with 19 inch alloys and LED running lights, massive TAG watch glinting sat in the outside lane of the motorway on the way to the sales meeting with all 140 diesely bhp being unleashed, grimacing as their spine is pummeled by their suspensionless vehicle, angrily flashing the now humbled BMW drivers out of the way, trying to remember which shade of silver their car is out of the 236 different words Audi have for Silver (like eskimo's and snow), sat in the glow of the sat nav screen which is the only light source in the unremittingly dark place they call an interior, in physics there is the Black Hole as a concept, and Audi Interior these days is the slightly up market "Black Leather Hole", all light is devoured. they dream at night of rash overtakes, bad parking, tailgating and opportunities they can use to bore any dinner party guest stless about fuel economy.

with a sizeable bit of turbo lag
Understatement. Friend of mine had the US version of this as his loaner for visitors. I seem to recall they called it the 5000 or something. Anyway, it was the five pot quattro turbo one. He lent it to me when I visited him in New Jersey for my trip up north of Boston. I normally get on just fine with left hand drive - in automatic rental tin. This, by contrast, was LHD and manual, with that gaping-chasm style turbo lag. Led to the odd brown-trouser moment, that did.

I have bought the Audi 200 turbo. I'd like to inform you all that it is not owned by a farmer (not sure where PHs got that from), is definately not a shed, is in excellent original condition and been well looked after!
It has factory air conditioning/climate control which is fully operational and brown leather interior. Turbo seems to be fine, no white smoke when revved or warm. Superb value for money and if the turbo did ever go it's binable at that price!

No way, my grandpa used to have one of these, in fact the first one in the UK! I quite like it, although I wouldn't pay that amount of money for it!
Did grandpa work for Audi ? - as i guess, most 200s first owners were senior Audi staff911stu said:
I think the archive photo is a 20 valve 200 as it has round rear arches.
Worth noting that UK never got a 20 valve 200 (not that i'm saying you did)
