Sorry to be a pedant, but can I make a note to sub-editors here: 'sat' is the past simple of 'to sit', as in 'I sat next to her', but is not the continuous form, as in 'I was sitting next to her'. The sentence, 'A father and son from the States sat on the other side of the room have been pretty quiet' is therefore completely incorrect, as it uses the past simple in place of the continuous. It should read, 'A father and son from the States sitting on the other side of the room have been pretty quiet'.
You wouldn't write 'A friend was drove on the track' when you meant 'A friend was driving on the track', so why is this particular error (along with similar confusion over 'stood' and 'standing') so ubiquitous?

€199 to rent an Alpha 75 for the day unlimited miles. Or €945 for the days course but you'll not be driving all of it.
I think fun per € theres more to be had in the Alpha myself.
Who makes this 'Alpha' you speak of? Is it the same people who make the PMW 3 Series and the Oudi A4?I think fun per € theres more to be had in the Alpha myself.

I hired the R26.r from RSR back in June, as an experienced trackdayer I found the briefing and general help very good, the only negative is if like me you you hire the car on TF you may not get to use all the laps, but to be fair to the chaps they have given me a credit for my next visit.
One thing to bare in mind is the excess, lets just say it focuses the mind a little!
I will be back.

Seriously though, with the Alfa rental you have to pay for your own TF laps, and it's over £100 for ten so it quickly mounts up. Also, everytime I've been I've had to constantly slow for accidents and to overtake slow people who haven't seen me. Added to that, whilst the 75 is a great car, I'd happily pay the extra for bang up to date Lotus ride and handling. so just under 1000 Euros for the Exige day seems like cracking value for money to me.

Great article, but "touching 200mph"...in an Exige!? Surely not even at Nardo!

or is that an Edit?
Anyways:
Cool car, quick when in narrow powerband and very intimate. This is the presscar somewhere in the Netherlands. Had a quick blatt 'n shoot with Lotus scribbler Johnny Tipler.
'Delivery mileage', does this mean that these cars don't need running in? Or is 'delivery mileage' something else i.e. it stems from the time when it referred to the factory to dealership mileage but now means that the car has been run in and not accumulated many more miles than say 1500?

the man with an answer for the question nobody asked. i didnt notice the error or what ever you want to call it. get over it, someone made a misstake, big deal. You wouldn't write 'A friend was drove on the track' when you meant 'A friend was driving on the track', so why is this particular error (along with similar confusion over 'stood' and 'standing') so ubiquitous?

So many things... I'll just answer a few.
1) The difference between renting a car and doing one of our courses
Rent a car, join the queue for public sessions. Dodge bikes and busses, only overtake on the left, sit for 2hrs as they scrape somebody off the tarmac, repeat. Typical lap count on our rental car on a full day is between 8 and 15 laps. Insurance excesses are much higher and the chance of an accident far greater.
2) You don't want instruction as you've been on a track before.
Our instruction isn't for people who can't drive. Seven of last year's Marathon 500 winners were students of RSR. If you think you have nothing to learn in a car or at the 'ring, I don't want you driving our €50k car!
3) I don't want to share a car.
Most customers do between 10 and 18 laps on the school day, plus a similar amount passengering with their partners or instructors. The passenger laps allow you to concentrate 100% on the track and the instruction. If you want to pay €1699 you can do the course in one car with no sharing, but be warned that most people do only the same number of laps, and the car just sits there while they have drink and wee breaks every other lap. The limit is your own concentration.
4) 200mph
Interestingly our old 996 GT3RS used to hit 310kph easy peasy in VLN practice, overtaking RSRs and Cup cars. That's only on MPSCs. The race cars all hit an aerodynamic wall at around 280-290kph thanks to the wings etc... Oh, and they brake about 50 mtrs later and carry about 10kph at each apex. At which point you really appreciate the difference between a road car and a race car...

Thanks for the response Dale
I think it's also worth pointing out with regard to the comments above regarding the cost, if you rent a car even half as good as the Exige from one of RSR's competitors it'll cost at least £500 for the day. Throw in 10 or 20 laps of the ring and you very quickly get to the cost of RSR's Exige experience. Plus with RSR's package you get instruction and it's not during the tourist laps (which are usually riddled with accidents!). Also, out of the rental/track day instruction that I've had, the RSR instructor that I sat with when I rented from them before was undoubtedly the best I've had.
I've rented a couple of cars at the ring and been there a few times in my own car and honestly, this is an absolute bargain I'll certainly be signing up for it on my next ring visit.
edited to say: My comment regarding experienced racers who wish to take the course wasn't assuming that they were arrogant enough to think they didn't need instruction at all (we all get coaching, I'm sure), it was just suggesting that spending the evening before the driving day listening to the "basics of car control" might be time wasted that could be better spent (both from the students point of view and the safety of the cars) learning about how to drive the ring or the Exige itself. I'm a trainer/instructor, and where possible we split students into groups dependent on ability, and compress the basics into a refresher session for those in higher ability groups. This also allows us to give novices the time they need to learn more thoroughly than they would otherwise.
