Recently divorced, ex has the car but havent sorted finances out yet. therefore i want to buy a car for £2-4k but it needs to be something a bit speedy/stylish/cool... Only has to last a couple of years before i then buy something a bit more substantial.

Needs to have 4 seats but the back ones dont have to be huge - just to fit a 4 and 6 yr old.

Any ideas???

I recently made the shock discovery that you can get an M3 for that sort of money now!

Well sorted 328 might be a better bet though, or even an early 330.

If you want something a bit more sideways, how about a mkiv Supra Turbo.

What about the bills? Wont a 944 cost you the same again every year at that age?

Only if you take it to a porsche dealership for work.

Only thing I'd say is that personally the E36 BMW is a bit bland. Not stylish or cool surely, although quick?

I think all BMWs are a bit bland. The 328 I had a few years ago certainly was, but it was reliable, quick and fun to drive and within that price range even then. It was surprisingly economical too.

The previous model Civic Type-R 'just' about falls into budget if you shop around?

How about this?

Ok it is about 12 times your budget, and doesn't have back seats, but, mmmmmmmmmm

Nice V8 Vantage at the same place, which would be a bit more practical

The 944 is a fantastic car and with mpgs of between 38 - 43mpg (On my 944 lux!) on a run not bad on economy either. However you will struggle with the chilblains in the back as you can't easily fit child seats. The rear seats are only really 1/2 seats. Although I heard you can get specially fitted seats, what cost that would be I have no idea.

Or you could go american, try mustangs or I just picked up a 3.4l v6 chevvy camaro for £3k only 44k miles on the clock excellent condition, and a great fun car if you don't mind sitting on the wrong side of the car!

Enjoy!

I'm not sure about stylish or cool but the Clio 172 sits in the middle of your budget. Resonably nippy, good fun and cheap to run.
