Also on the forum I read that the E39 M5 Touring was built for someone at BMW who used it as his everyday car.
Here you go. It was built for the guy who designed the engine:

yes

There's a chap who converted a E39 540i Tourer to an E39 M5 Tourer much like the one in the link above. It's been seen driving around the Thames Valley area and I think the number plate reads 'M5 EST'.

At the time there was no plan to build an E39 M5 whatsoever. The M3 was the performance car from BMW, or the Coupe....with the 540i being fast enouh to keep most people happy...ie America!

The uproar was so huge that BMW losing sales to AMG back tracked to design the E39 M5 and look at the sccess that followed.

I do wonder with so many things German why they lack passion and the inability to make clear and correct decisions?

As often quoted by my old history master...if Hutler and the Luftwaffe has continued to bomb our airfields for 14 more days the Battle of Britain would have been over before it began.....instead they bombed London.

BMW has made some strange 'sales' decisions' over the years....too many 'accountants and focus groups' and not enough engineers and listening to what us performance drivers need.

I'm not a fan to be honest but love the estate! Cool car as a one off but just think it looks a bit odd. Looks like I am the only one though!

When i worked for BMW we visited the M Power facility and saw all sorts of oddball cars,i saw the M5 Cab pictured and saw more that a couple of M5(E39) Tourings

In fact we saw the 8 series cab an E30 M3 pick up,we also saw an E36 M powered Touring but the car that i really liked was the E46 Compact with full M3 Running gear...in fact i cant remember them all, there were loads of things.

Just think, if BMW had pursued the line of thinking of a medium sized convertible 5 series and, following that logic through, also a 2 door fixed head coupe 5 series, we wouldn't have needed the recent A5 from Audi as BMW would have sewn up this lucrative sector of the market years ago (with all subsequent 5 series incarnations including these models in the line up).

I don't really understand the fascination with fast estates. Just how quickly do you need to get to the tip?

The convertible 5 Series though lick

I think I've soiled myself.

It's as if some German form of Zagatoism has been visited upon these two modern masterpieces but unlike many monstrous Anglo-Italian aberrations, delivered bullseye searing aesthetics.

The non-production of an E39 M5 Touring has to be considered quite tragic. frown

"At least one E34 M5 version of the car was built, however, as these pictures published by Autocar attest. The car was apparently revealed to a 'select' group of media at recent birthday celebrations for the M5's 25th anniversary."

BMW nuts have known about the m5 cabrio for years, the top b&w photo has been around for quite a while. The extra "apparently" is an odd phrase,

It's been known for a while, and the "new" pictures are of a different car to the original, so i wonder if the new shots are of a post production chop shop. There are quite a few 8 series cabrios running around, and the finish looks 100% OEM.

It`as such a shame that car makers don`t sell more "oddball" variants.

Yeah yeah, money money money profit profit profit, but it endears you to them when they do, I`m starting to admire Renault more and more for it!
+1 It should be made a legal requirement that they spend at least 1% of profits on a model variant that is completely pointless! wink
