I think i get the idea of this car and who its aimed at..youngerish drivers that cant afford to insure/run/buy an M3.. its not a bad idea, and i actually think it would do well. For me i would say a nice sporty interior (but not totally stripped out, and back seats please. as i have friends & family) and 330bhp sounds good! thats scooby and evo area. i would imagine £25K-£30K for this ?? or surly one would just go for new a focus RS.. not in putrid green though lol.
Nice try, but miles off!"330bhp" and "affordable" do NOT go in the same sentence where German manufacturers are concerned.
This car will be pitched ABOVE the 135i in price, even if not straight-line pace. So expect this "affordable" ( ) car to come in at close to £40k. Plus options. So about where the (343bhp) E46 M3 left off then...
As for weight - no chance. M-division left their "Motorsport" roots behind a long time ago - this new car won't be a CSL of any sort, but a full-fat lard-arse with over-stiff suspension but (finally) a good diff of the sort all 'cooking' 1's and 3's have been crying out for for years.
IMHO this car will become the darling of the journalists for as long as it takes someone else to bring something similar out, but ultimately will prove less popular with punters (new or 2nd hand) than the (IMHO) apogee of usable-performance M-cars - the E46 M3.
If they had made the Tii then they wouldn't need an M.
And M division today (going on their X5 and X6 variants) seems to mean Marketing and Money division, so expect more weight and more power
The Tii with lower weight, lower toy count to keep price low, and the 3.0 valvetronic engine would appeal hugely to me.
If BMW make an M car of this, it needs to be lower weight and use an NA motor imho. Outright power wouldn't matter to me... lower weight and a 'good' power to weight would mean more!

the E46 M3csl wasn't a lard arse, nor will the new M3 gts be. I agree, their cars have got heavier, but what main stream brands cars haven't? people only seem to blame BMW for some reason....and the new M3 hides it's weight very very well, of that i can guarantee you, having spent many many hours in one

I wonder how much weight they could realistically ditch while maintaining day-to-day usability.
Depends on wether you count multi function wheels, multi zone climate control, heated seats, sat nav with thousands of options, electric windows, electric mirrors, heated front/rear/side screen, heated seats, etc. as being essential for day to day usability. Most of them are surplus to requirements if all they're wanting to do is cut weight.
No doubt a lightweight version would cost several £k more and have a similar weight reduction to taking a couple of senokot .....
You can already get the 335i/135i engine tuned to 380 bhp by Hartge or Hamann (I forget which) that was featured in Performance BMW a while back. It certainly won't be called an M1 but maybe a 135i S/RS/M or some other letter at the end. Many companies can give you more than 330 bhp from that engine and many companies can provide suspension and slippy diffy upgrades. There will have to be a bit more time spent in the way of discreet body mods, wheels, interior (all light weight of course) to make this interesting. 307 bhp - 330 bhp is hardly noticeable.
Having owned an original 2002tii I was quite intrigued by the potential of the name coming back with the 1 Series Concept tii but that seemed to have disappeared and then morphed into some upgraded parts that Evo are now trying out on their long termer.
It woud be great to see a light(er) 1'er but I think it will be pretty unlikely imho, a real shame as the tii looked great, even the interior is pretty focused ie no buttons on the steering wheel, no nav etc -
