Agree 100%. Swapped the wife's 306GTi for a Golf GTi, and also looked at the Focus and Leon at the same time, and while all were quicker than the Pug, none were as involving, as communicative, nor as agile. And all were easily over 1,300kg (Focus >1,400kg), which means they are actually heavier than an E36 3-series...
To be fair, most of the Hatches from todays line-up have much more room inside than an e36.I've said before- my car is not far off the length of a 7 seat VW Sharan, and it's nearly as tall.
They are fatter because the consumer has demanded more equiptment.
When you compare the physical aspects of some being offered- some now comming with 19/20" alloy wheels.
You're never going to get any decent feedback through the chassis with something like that attached in a road car.
But you wouldn't want the pansy 17" wheels with the bigger profile tyres on, because they will look like pram wheels behind the pumped up arches.
To me, they have evolved from being Hot Hatches into something else- more Junior GT. (If you ignore the mechanical layout & the looks, or, pretty much anything else that would class them as GT cars )
I'm talking about their pace more than anything & the ability to cover ground 4up + kit in the boot at a pace that they shouldn't be able to.
Personally, I like the way they have evolved- more creature comforts- Sat Nav, Leather seats etc...etc... Suits me fine, i'm getting older, my family is growing & I want my car to 'grow' with me.
I don't need a razzy engine, or the feedback from the wheel when at 10/10ths. I very, very rarely get to have any fun in the car whilst the family is out with me- which is almost 95% of the time.
Plus, with close to 300bhp on tap, any fun is short lived as the speeds get ridiculous & would end up with jail time.
IMO, if you want a hot hatch (as in keeping with the original concept of the orginal GTis) you need to be looking at the Polo GTis, Twingo Cups, Fiat 500 Abarths & the like.
That's where you'll find the driver satisfaction of a Hatchback.
But, back on topic...I'd also take a 5dr Golf R
I would probably go for the 207 GTi 175 for a few reasons: To start with its quite a bit cheaper than most in the same category. Even though it doesnt have the 200 odd bhp for the straight line performance, acording to a few reviews it is better in the corners than the majority and is still faster around some track (see 207 GTi topic) than the new clio 200.
I dont particularly mind the looks (better than the 200) the civic type R already lookes very dated and all the others are a bit heavy i think.
Not saying i would actually have it though...onyl if i had too

Focus RS I think for me, although I wouldn't say no to the Scirocco or the Megane. Not driven one, but I have a suspicion the 'Rocco would actually be the best all rounder.
I'd love to be in that dilemma - well, providing money wasn't an option and it was a daily driver, I'd rather spend the same amount of money on an outright sports car if it was a toy.

Focus ST with Mountune kit - it destroys the RS yet without the excessively high 'perched' seating position, VERY firm ride and chav-tastic looks. If I couldn't have the Mountune'd ST, I'd have the Scirocco. In a suitably evil colour.
How does a Mountune ST "destroy" an RS?It has less power, and yet only weighs slightly more (both are heavy old beasts).
I've read much about the "perched" seating position in the ST also, so its no different?
Cant comment on the ride. Neither are exactly THAT understated.
I suppose at least the ST doesnt have "RS tax" added to the price.
