Gone with the scooby, but next would be the Megane RS, have driven a 330s on a track experience day, you need to have faith in the front end and trust that it would behave in a manner like my scooby but once you do, wow, what a car it was. (still prefer the classics though)

Not driven a new megane but was very impressed with a friend of mines older one, enough to sway me towards it.

None on the list. MINI Cooper S JCW weighs less than all of these. Although would probably prefer an R53 or DC5. Does an RX8 count?

The MINI is a class smaller and utterly impractical.

I'll have an Audi S3 Sportback thanks! You have missed quite a few Hyper Hatches off the list as well as the S3! such as the Seat Leon Cupra R, Mitsubish Lancer Ralliart, Volvo C30 T-5, and the BMW 130i

Crackers. Are you people chosing on retained value, corporate office carpark kudos and what the parents at the school gates would like?

Subaru. Without a doubt- just think the Focus (although tweaked) is 'nice'. The Scirocco? Ranks alongside the Brera for nice IMO wink

Subaru for raw PH-appeal anyday. biggrin
confused Except the new Imprezza has had decidedly mediocre reviews all 'round and the Scirocco and RS have had universally good ones.
If I was going to have a shuffle over one of these cars. It wouldnt be the Focus, or the 3door-squashed Golf. It would be the Scooby. All day everyday biggrin
That's fair enough, but you seemed to be implying that it was an objectively better drivers' car when all the reviews imply exactly the opposite. Or perhaps I have a different definition of PH-appeal to you.

I find it crazy to think that anyone would pay upwards of anything for any 'new' car, given how they tend to depreciate. biggrin

Even madder, who pays almost 20k for the 1.4 entry level Scirocco? Basically a Golf?
This is something I don't understand. What has the capacity of the engine got to do with anything? It's got about 170bhp hasn't it?

Smaller class surely makes it lighter and more
nimble surely? Also I didn't see the op specified anything for practicality.

No but he didn't include any of the smaller class of hot hatches so it's not unreasonable to infer that he was talking about the bigger ones that you can actually get four people in.

I voted for the Renault. The rocco just looks too wide and high, I mistook a Renault Espace for one in the dark the other day!

although i really like the look of the Scirocco R the more I see pics of it from behind i take your point of it looking to high.

wouldn't it be interesting to see the values of all in the poll after a year.

the megane would not doubt 'then' be a bargin. only the RS Focus and Scirocco R are limited editions.

Personally I wouldn't pay more than a few grand for a FWD hatchback.

hehe That's another thing I've never understood. How can someone be a fan or otherwise of a marque as diverse as Ford or VW? It's not as if their cars are all designed by the same person.

Focus because I had a MK1 Focus (1.8) and thought it was great.

Assuming buying 2nd hand and on a budget though I'd get the Mazda 3 MPS. They always seem a bargain.

None.

If I wanted b-road fun/occational track day I'd go Renaultsport.

For family/practical use, I'd go Golf GTI - barely slower than a 'rocco R around a track according to this month's issue of Car and save some cash.

The RenaultSport in the list not what you're looking for?

See where you are coming from. I just find the VW cars have a common theme- hard to put your finger on but the best way I can describe it as soul or quirkiness (none of their cars contain their own unique soul- they seem to be an almageration of at least another VW overlapping)
I know what you mean, but I'd level the same criticism at just about all mainstream car manufacturers. Even Alfa and BMW these days don't seem to offer anything particularly interesting.

No, for b-road fun a Clio or Twingo Cup would probably be more fun, smaller, more hot-hatch-ish and a lot cheaper.
