It's not like M could say to mother BMW : "No , sorry , i won't make this car" . They had to make it . Why ? Because it sells , it sells more than a CSL version of the M3 or a Z4 . Why ? Because people like to show off more and go to track less ( or at all ) . It's a good move , and think that BMW needs to sell so they can stay independent . And they are selling . I'd go for a M5 instead of this without even blinking , but that's just me smile
+1 and to go even further, I'd dare to say that this could even sell better than the M5, just for the "posing" factor this thing has. And that's what this thing is imo, just a big poser car for people that are too dumb to see an M5 would be better in every way.

I can't stop thinking they made this to make the E60 5-series look like a handsome car.

It is me, or are BMW (and Audi to an extent) trying to out niche Mercedes? Merc started out trying to have a model range that covered the whole alphabet IMO, with weirdness such as the R class, ML and GL as well as the G-wagen, now BMW are coming out with the 5 Series GT, X1 and this monstrosity. Audi with such delights as the A5 Sporthatch.... and the Q5 thingumyeek
I think merc were doing quite right... why does everybody condones the R-class as a niche??? A colleague has one, and to me it's just a "premium-brand" Espace/Voyager/Galaxy? 7 seats in luxury... I really really can't find the niche in there... Maybe it's too expensive compared to the competition, but that still doesn't make it a niche. A A4 is too expensive compared to the competition, but that doesn't make it a niche car, does it? Am I missing something on the R that other people see and I don't?

I do not like this as it is a complete 'cock mobile' !

However, it does stick 2 fingers up to the eco mentalists which is always good!

I reckon you'll see a few of these driving around East London soon, with blacked out windows, hiding short occupants, all with the same haircut...

The perfect car for the perfect stereo type.

Already seen one and a similar X5M fitting that description in my part of West London, along with several similar Q7's.

I think it's such a sad inditement of the world today that manufacturers feel the need to build such hideous vehicles.

It's almost as if the manufacturers are building polar opposites of either hideous over the top naffness such as the X5M/X6M etc., or equally hideous naffness such as the Pious and the G-Whizz, with nothing in between.

Ostentatious springs to mind!

It's fast for what it is. A huge showy tank. But if it was smaller, lighter etc it wouldn't be fighting against its own dimensions to be fast and handle well.

I have a feeling it may attract the total stereotype of a BMW driver.

I've driven a non-M edition and I thought it was brilliant.
It goes against practicalities and environmental arguments but it's a toy and they won't sell millions so it gets my vote.

ZING!

I've always hated the X6, never understood the point behind it.

I hate the fact they've made an M Version (and not of the Z4)

However...

£77k for an off road car that can't go off road. Or match a road car. How dumb are some buyers hehe

I'm glad we can say it is pointless and wrong (on so many levels) without being shot-down for not having enough petrol in our veins. I agree with most of the sentiment above. I'd rather have an M5 or even an X5 over this monstrosity.

Agreed.
I also agree with Garlick about the vocal sounds too. At the British MotoGP at Donington I was mightily impressed by the aural tones of BM's glorious sounding V10 M6 used as a course car which contrasted with the very ordinary sounding X6M that was let loose on track occasionally. Pathetic indeed.
I reckon the average Range Rover Sport would sound better.

Should have had a fleet of these ferrying the world's politicians to and from the Copenhagen eco summit, that would have raised a few eyebrows...just tell them the dash is made from recycled fairydust...

If this car was just a bit better looking and better proportioned, i.e. if it didn't have that huge arse for starters, it would have been more palatable. Still pointless but at least it wouldn't shout about it! But then as many are saying, maybe that's the point?!

Surely this car will sell in such limited numbers as to make it a total waste of money, time and engineering effort??

I wonder how the M division REALLY feel about this car...we need a few renegade members of that department to start working 'overtime' like they did with the 'running shoe' Z3M Roadster, just think what they could come up with with the current V8 engines they have at their disposal. If only...

Really hate the X5 and X6. Because they are pointless, ugly, too large, too heavy, too uneconomical and because of the people that drive them. Doesn't seem to matter whether the driver is male or female. Must be the car as it brings out aggression and/or stupidity. On my commute can almost guarantee when I see one in the rear-view mirror that soon it will be 2ft from my bumper, trying to get me to pull-over, even though both lanes in front are full. Would love to have a neon sign on my rear-windscreen with "hey s******* - 4-wheel drive gives you traction to accelerate faster - it doesn't help you brake so get off my taillights!". Unfortunately Switzerland is full of the b***** things. I can understand that BMW wants to make money from the 4x4/SUV sector but to make and M version of the X5 and X6 is a desecration of the M badge INMO.

Are there any drug dealer extras available for it? Armour plating, drug despatch hatch, hidey holes for a stash, gun turrets.... It just needs some 30 inch rims, drop the belly to the floor..... Wicked.

The 'standard' X6 is a truly horrendous vehicle, but this is exasperated by having a M badge on the back. It seems BMW went to Stephen Ireland and said we'd like to build a car just for you and if it's not tasteless enough then we've got the address of AC Schnitzer. If you drive one of these you are going to be classed by everyone as a .

I love it.

I love the fact that they can build it. I love the fact that it exists.

We should respect everyones freedom to have one of these if they want one, without criticism IMO.

With over-regulation and the nanny state seemingly just around the corner, this car is a definitive "up yours" to the government and the eco-fascists.

For that reason alone I think it should be welcomed.
agreed

i'd have one cool

I bet it is great, fast, decent handling, comfy, solid and loads of toys but like guns, anyone who wants one, shouldnt be allowed to have one, for most taste and not wanting to look like a flash agressive bell end is enough to rule it off the potential purchases list if they have the requisite 77 grand. Personally I dont want to drive a car that looks like its from Crackdown, the Xbox game.

The owners may actually be the nicest people you could meet but I doubt it, I have also seen X6's parked badly and being driven agressively, its like BMW realised that the RR Sport and Q7 had captured the agressive selfish cock market and had to introduce something more appealing to the target market, I beleive as well it has broken the Pistonheads "Cockometer(tm)" as it went off the scale, a new one has had to be ordered and re-calibrated.

Its not a money, jealousy thing, if I see an Aston, Porsche 911 Turbo, Veyron or any other much more expensive car I think cool or that the owner has equisite taste and is very lucky.

I think the X5 (and similar cars) have a place as, while it's not particularly good at any one thing it does pretty well everything you could ask of a car in one vehicle. They're family utility vehicles.

The tailgating thing isn't to do with it being a 4WD, it's because the drivers are sitting higher up. I drive a Touareg now and again and you can't help but feel superior to all the little people.
