Yes you can, done it a few times, but it takes a while. at least 15 mins with donor car engine running

A good set of jump leads will start an x5 straight away.you can connect onto the battery in the boot or onto the connector under the red flap under the bonnet.you may get a few warning lights on the dash if the battery is very flat-these usually turn off once the battery is up to operating power

Thats not what I find with mine. The only time it started off jump leads straight away, was when the other end of the jump leads was a cross channel ferry!

If you're worried you could bump start it if on a hill, or use a tow rope from the Disco.

I bought a battery booster and it's brilliant, no messing around with jump leads etc.

I've always managed to start them with a jump pack.

The cheapie jump leads you can pick up from a petrol station etc just aren't heavy duty enough to allow a decent electrical flow to the flat battery.

sounds like you need to invest in a decent set of leads.the ones used on the ferry will have been good quality ones-they can't afford to have non starting cars with their timetable.
The discovery battery should have enough cranking power to fire up the x5 first go

I have got a good set of jump leads! Maybe I have a duff battery, goes flat in no time ie if not used for a week.

how old is it? Something could be draining it.

I've jump started my old 2.8D delica many times and the 3.0D vito once, no problems, using heavy duty leads of course.

Thank you all SO much for your swift replies!
We've not long had the X5 (54 Plate 3.0D) and I was giving it a hoover out etc - however had the stereo and possible the dip lights on for around 1-hr.. Doh!

My Dad came round earlier with his Disco and some jump leads but no joy! His jump leads have been used on a number of occasions to start his Disco.. But they were not good enough for the X5! Just 'click click click'!

The RAC have been called - how embarrassing!

Does that mean that X5 flat batteries is a pretty regular occurence, your is a lemon, or it only ever gets short trips with all the toys drawing power?

Probably too late if you've already called the AA , but it should start had you left the disco and jump leads connected and running for about 15 mins ( as already stated ) .

if its that flat the battery may be fubar

but disconnect the battery and attach the jump leads direct to the black and re leads, then try it as you will be running straight from the other car, make sure the jump leads and your red and black cables do not touch anything. if your still click click clicking then its more than just the battery

Managed to get mine going (4.4 petrol) from a smart with decent leads. Seems to do it once every few weeks. A bit annoying. Do buy decent leads think £30 plus.

Put the Lights and heated screen on as soon as the engine is started to even out any voltage spikes. This can blow modules on the vehicle and can be expensive. Wait 5 mins before doing anything with the car to allow the vehicles battery voltage and charging system to stabilise.
