Hmmm, i think i just found out what happens is you give 90 k to a propper company and tell them to make the best damn 4x4 they can with it.

And you'd have enough change for a holiday or three
Yeah but you cant drive that everyday. I went to snowdonia recently in mine, drove through mud, rivers, and allsorts in road tyres and drove home after all that fun. This year im planning a 22,000 mile road trip from London to Sydney. I wouldnt want to do that in a Bowler!

All,
Just wanted to introduce ourselves here at Mercedes-Benz World as we'll be looking after the G-Class when it returns to the UK later this year through the Specialist Products Division in Brooklands.

We're looking forward to working with both current and new owners with this iconic brand and welcome any comments.

Our dedicated G-Class website will be updated shortly with all the model information and options available - we'll let you know when it goes live!

The allocation of cars for this year will be very limited and we encourage any interested purchasers to reserve and build slot with a deposit now.

Please contact one of the Personal Liaison Managers to discuss in the further detail. Either call us on 0845 600 3142 or e-mail us at specialistproducts@daimler.com.

Thanks
Specialist Product Division
Mercedes-Benz World, Brooklands.

So me, I got a Rang Rover 3.9 Classic shape and boy was that SOOOO Much better! Kept it 5 years!!
We took that RR in 2002 and he was impressed when he drove it back to ferry!!
Especially as he'd been driving it for about forty minutes when I woke up and told him to put into D!
Ah that's better he said! tt!

<SNIP>

These cars are impractical, heavy, thirsty and not very refined but they are soo cool, my dad nearly bought one in the late 80's but got a 5 series instead. They were cool when they were first out, they are even cooler now.

I would have one in an instant!

Even the brochure looked cool in 1989:

Thanks thats an interesting looking vehicle, but i'd prefer to stick with the G!

The plan is to drive through Europe, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Saudi to UAE. Cross the water by boat from Dubai to Karachi. Up through pakistan to India, and then Burma to Thailand (if we get permission to drive the Ledo Road). If not then pakistan-China-Laos, or pakistan-India-Nepal-Tibet-China-Laos-Thailand. Then Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor and Ferry to Oz (Darwin). Then drive down south to Sydney!

Website should be up and running soon with complete details.

For those who love their "Gs" - Moscow or Sofia are the places to go - full of Brabus and Lorinser G-Wagens. G55s are usually reserved for the bodyguards...

I have to agree, G55 are for the bodygards, so keeps telling me my step brother (yes, he has 2 of them in Moscow)...yet i still want one.

If only we could find nice ones here in the UK. I could only find one black G55 and one silver G500 on autotrader.

Oh well...RR full fat Supercharged for me frown

I used to work at a MB dealership, we had an automotive export place near us that used to order bits for new style U.N. G Wagons. I sold an axle once, as one located somewhere unknown ran over a landmine and survived. Must have been a lucky escape, but still impressive.

They used to keep a pile of door control units though, as they wouldn't behave themselves.

This is as good a place as any to dig up the Brabus Unimog :

Never really liked these, overpriced ugly fk of a land rover defender clone. They should cost less than an M class which is a far more desirable and sensible product.
The M class is far more desirable?

Explain why the G-wagen is seen as a style icon and Mercedes can charge £100,000 all day long for a top model and it hardly ever depreciates while the M class is seen as s joke both on and off road?

The G wagen is for big boys. The M is for Chelsea mums

Excellent news, having recently had a fairly modern version G400 cdi (2002 model) with all the toys,IMO it is the only Merc that is built like Mercs used to be built, feels like it will last forever.Lots of money now but what price quality.

Watch this 10 part TV show where an expert team of G-wagen specialists buy and restore an old G280D from the ground up (including every nut, bolt and washer).

The words 'over engineered' applies to many cars, but in this case it really does apply. What an awesome piece of engineering.

http://www.w463.de/orc-280ge.htm

The video is in German and is their equivalent to Wheeler Dealers (though its much longer and goes into much more detail).

If you love cars, you will love this video set. Truly epic.

Enjoy all G-wagen fans.

I quite like the G-Wagon's ...

recently had a lift from one by a very nice chap when my car got stranded in the snow , it was a RHD 5L V8 - apparently only a very few made in the early 90's ... was really solidly built and tank like - the doors are *massive* .

I would have one ..not sure what the petrol bill would be in a 5L v8 ?!
