Saw the R8 Spyder in the flesh at the Hahnenkamm Downhill in Kitzbuhel which Audi was sponsoring at the week-end and I was not at all impressed by the looks. The rear is massive and looks odd as the front is very low and sleek. Not a good looking convertible.

It's just 'nice' though, like its coupe siblings. Obviously I ought to point out at this point I haven't driven any of them, but basing this on looks - which is a little bit more pertinent than performance in the case of drop tops, for a variety of reasons - I'd rather have the Maserati GranCabrio fully specced. That's a stunning-looking machine. The Audi's 'nice' but it doesn't really evoke the same stirring in the loins as the GranCabrio. I can only speculate that the Audi will probably do lap times much faster than the Maser, but for top-down cruises along the Amalfi coast? I know which one I'd rather have...
And, fully specced, I believe the Maser is only £2k more than the vanilla R8 cost - where there'll be plenty of options to add on...

I'm more concerned by the fact that Pistonheads.com which is apparently Europes no.1 motoring website can't even spell the name of the British current FIA Formula 1 World Champion currectly! Disgracefull.

Drove an r8 (hard top) today and was rather underwhelmed, felt far too refined and quiet.... I would pay extra for a more raw experience, hence the r8 is not for me, nice looking car though.
V8 or V10, the V8 does feel like you say, however the V10 is fantastic

Why specify in the article that an automatic gearbox can be chosen as an optional extra?
