I also don't understand all the bashing. The 207 GTi is a capable car! I don't have one myself but it does handle its power very well. Since it has less bhp than most of its competitors it is cheaper to insure, but is still just as fast if not faster once you throw in some twisties. I also dont think they look to bad, infact one of the nicer cars in its class atm.

I've used these lap times before, but here they are agin for those who haven't seen them.

TRC mag tested hot hatches in 2007 around Bruntingthorpe. Times were:

Mégane R26 1min 24.93s
Clio 197 R27 1min 25.51s
Honda Civic Type R 1min 26.97s
Peugeot 207 Gti 1min 27.03s
Mazda 3 MPS SAK 1min 27.03s
VW Golf Gti Edition30 1min 27.50s
Vauxhall Corsa VXR 1min 27.75s
Seat Leon Cupra 1min 27.78s
Vauxhall Astra VXR 1min 27.89s
Volvo C30 T5 R-design 1min 29.44s
Mitsubishi Colt Black Hawk 1min 31.52s
I don't understand all the 207 bashing either. Seems to be de rigueur with all the know it alls on here. I thought my GTI was really good fun to drive, had a lovely neutral chassis and a great little engine. Even thought the steering was pretty good too, better than a 197's which everyone raves about.

The engine is much, much better than the 197's in my opinion. Actually has some character. Get a BMW MINI tuner to dial it up to around 200bhp, and that's a great little car. I'm just waiting until they get into my price range!

to be fair i don't think people do rave all that much about the 197's steering.

unlike a lot of people on here i do see the 'showroom appeal' of the pug gtis. the 206 gti was quite appealing with the alcantaraish seats and decent wheels and stuff. it was just a bit crap relatively speaking.

most new cars are 'fine' and if peugeot were a korean manufacturer making these cars they'd be quite good. but making okay cars and making out they're omething they're not is why people are a bit anti.

Sorry I meant the car in general, I remember the steering being one of the criticisms.

Was starting to think I was the only one who thought they were good "little" cars. Will also be looking at one in a few years I think.

[quote=Oddball RS]Yes i remember the Braham Viva, had a worked over engine (Head and cam) from memory in the ilk of the Holbay Hunters / H120's and Avenger Tiger, the 4R2? no you've got me with that one.

The Metro 4R2 was a limited edition Metro which, I think, may have been unique to Kent/Sussex ARG dealers - and a bloody good thing to.

It celebrated the Metro 6R4 rally car which had, of course, 6 pots, 4wd and a reasonable reputation in the hands of Mr A. Pond. So you take a standard white 1275 Metro, add a strip of corrugated plastic under the front bumper and a spoiler underneath the rear hatchback window, well out of the way of any harmful airflow. Tacky wheeltrims no doubt lowered unsprung weight compared to steel hubcaps whilst some serious stick on graphics gave you the necessary street cred -think of the reverse graphics on the BMW 2002 Turbo spoiler or the Carrera logo down the flank of a 911 and you get the idea.

Performance was leisurely, on the motorway it was apparently the only car that the flies weren't scared of.

Now the clever bit. What shall we call this beast ? Well, it has a 4 cylinder engine and 2wd so how about the 4R2. I guess the "R" was for ridiculous and not rally......

I used to work for Peugeot UK and remember taking a 106 GTI home for the night. Going along my favorite B-road, the car accelerated and handled so well I just burst out laughing because I was having so much fun. I loved the raw back to basics fun of the less powerful 106 Rallye (with it's non power assisted steering) and before I left I bought myself a 306 GTI-6. Good grip, nice steering, brilliant handling and lovely burble from the exhaust. I took pride in what Peugeot's chassis engineers were able to achieve. Then came the 206 with its dubious girly biased style over substance. It seems to have been going down hill ever since. Surely the Product Planning Department can't be proud of this effort?
