Why not just get a promotion? I don't understand people trying to save THAT much money when if I was that tight up....I'd be trying to earn more of it.

You're on the planet for a very short period of time - might as well have nice things whilst you're here.
I'm in the process of picking up a banger myself at the moment - I've recently got a new job (which was a promotion over my last job) and doing 90miles a day in the scooby is eating up silly amounts of the nice wage increase I managed. Putting large amounts of dull miles on my "fun" car doesn't offer good VFM in my eyes!
I suppose I can see the point if you've got a couple cars - I've got an old Landcruiser I've had for 10yrs that gets miles instead of the porsche. My assumption was the OP would only be using / buying the single car.

My apologies for jumping to conclusions smile

I'd not really want to rely on a £500 car to do 20,000 miles a year.

Add to that the fact a lot of bangers have been crapped recently, and there aren't as many £500 cars as there used to be.

Might get this for close to £500....
Sorry, but rofl

I had my first try of this recently, bought an old Mondeo ran it for loads of miles, never washed it or needed to do any work on it and then sold it for what I paid for it smile - I liked that part
However driving the car was sooo dull it made me almost forget what I like about cars, so DON'T buy a low spec MK2 Mondeo if you don't want to loose the will to live, but do buy one for cheaply getting around!!!

LOL, yes i'm a bit short of cash so i'll go and ask my boss for a promotion. It really is that simple isn't it.
Forget the fact that many businesses are struggling and letting people go. Forget the fact that many people are just thankfull that they still have jobs, i'll go and ask for a promotion. Even though the chance of a promotion existing in many companies is very slim, if one does come up there will be another 50 people interested. Now i'm good at my job but banking on being better than the other 50 people on the day is a bit of a gamble.

I don't know what planet you're from but back here in the real world life just isn't that simple.
When my old company said they weren't promoting people one year or giving pay rises due to the economic climate (this was back in 2007 I think), I put my CV together and interviewed elsewhere, assisted by headhunters.

I got an offer for a role that paid 42% more.

I never ended up taking that and went off and started a business myself, but the point still remains. Not everyone's business is doing badly at the moment, I know of many that are growing in double digits. To believe there's any limitation on your earnings potential outside of your time, health, and willingness to persevere is false from experience.
I'm not suggesting that a payrise isn't possible and i'm not suggesting that you shouldn't go for it, however the response that if you don't earn enough get a promotion is a bit silly really. You make it sound like just walking in asking for it and getting it.
Sure if you're very good then you may well be able to get more cash but equally it just may not happen.
We should all push our employers for more money. I have and sometimes it works but equally sometimes it doesn't.

It is also heavily dependant on what sector you work in and what qualifications/experience you have.

<bump>

I am about to jump onto the bangernomics bandwagon.

Am considering a mid 90's Honda Civic Lsi for around £500.

Anyone got a good reason why I shouldnt? Or can recommend a better £500 motor?

That must be the longest 'previously owned' list on PH?

P.S. When the 124 comes up for sale I'll give you £495 for it!

Is a new Renault Clio safer than a 15 year old Volvo? It depends on the crash, but I would say usually not.

Running cars for peanuts is fun, however much money you have.

Mine will hit 19,000 miles since Xmas Eve when I picked her up. She was at 209,500 miles then smile

£540, a yrs MOT, 50mpg and she runs on just about anything I throw in her fuel tank and perfect waftability.

By the time the year is up we will probably be looking at somewhere between 35-40,000 miles in the year.

Just bought a £600 rover 45 with 2.0td to get me from stirling to leith and back dailey (80 miles round trip) and its great. Did some reading before buying and it would apparently do 66mpg on the motor way and 54 on the extra urban. Wasn't expecting it to acheive that as its a heavy old barge...but its great.
Put £51 (at £1.12.9) in it 610 miles ago, and it just went into the red about 10 miles ago.

Its also brilliant for my licence. Instead of blasting along at stupid speeds and kacking myself when ever i see a brige overhead, im now compelled to keep to 65mph and just a little more to overtake. Boring driving it may be...but oh so relaxing.

I bought a Honda accord 2.2es aerodeck on the bay for £260 , done a few miles in the UK after selling my mx-5 and also brought it down to france , Old mans got it now for dragging stuff down the tip after his Xantia Shed died , TBH its not a car that will excite you but for reliability and huge toy count (and all still worked) plus a cracking engine , it was hard to beat , i bought a 2000 omega after and it was crap so thats gone and spent a litle more and now have a saab 900 coupe.
