I subcribe to the less is more idea. This is just a bit odd though - and that roof is awful.
I subscribe to the less is more if it costs less because you're paying for less. Otherwise just buy a normal car, rip out half the seats and all the good stuff, chuck it on the showroom floor and thenm insist on paying a premium for what's left. If you want the cachet then buy a Boxster, rip the roof off and pop down to Black's camping and erect a tent on it.

I find this an interesting concept, although I wish Porsche would have gone further for lightweight, rather than -a bit- for show. For instance, what is the point of the 'folding' back on the seats? Wouldn't 18" wheels end up being lighter? The double humps don't do much useful...

By the way, the car in the picture seems to be missing many of the good things about the concept: heavier than stock wheels, sports seats rather than 'folding back buckets'

Saw one of these out on the roads last week. Thought there was a hint of mini Carrera GT about it, though the roof looks a bit odd when up.
It looks like one of those awful Boxter > 'Carrera GT' conversions that seem to happen in the US...

+1
I own a Boxster S and use it everyday, be it snow or canned heat.
It comes with an excellent canvas top, efficient A/C and superb handling.
Why would one buy a car which can't be used as often as the standard version AND pay more for that?
Buy an Elise SC instead, if you want to know how a real lightweight car feels.

Having driven all the Boxster range back-to-back,the Spyder is the best of the bunch to throuw around. Its a very dramatic car in the flesh, roof up or down(Up takes 60seconds and stopping).Driving in serious rain the roof was okay, but sercurity is the issue. It's one flash looking car and if you have to leave this on the street I doubt you'd come back to it and find it in the same condition.

This is sadly why I have a new grey S outside and not the lovely white Spyder. If you have the means and a garage, get it bought.

If I could afford £50k on a summer car to keep in the garage.... this would be it cool

I love the looks, love the noise of the Porsche Flat 6's, and the double bubble rear deck is just fecking gorgeous!!

This would have a place in my theoretical lottery winning 10 car garage

Nice car - if you want a 2nd car boxter this is it, for all people who have to use it everyday it'll be a S...
It cannot be juged on the single changes, but the packet looks great, and given it is a Porsche will work, last and handle well thumbup

What an amazing mix of comments.

Sat in one the other day at Porsche Glasgow. Totally loved it. Looks great, feels very special to be in (unlike a Boxster S)and will no doubt hold more of it's value than a standard Boxster.

It's definitely a 2nd car unless you're the type that thought a 996 GT2 clubsport was acceptable every day (not many i guess) but as a great looking, amazing feeling way into a summer toy, i think it's a winner.

It might not be a GT3 but it's not trying to be. Besides it's not the same price and not aimed at the same market.

Bugs me when people say, hey get a mk1 996 GT3 or an exige instead and go on holiday with the change.....Sure why don't you sell your in warranty, special car that you worked hard for and is your choice just to get an older, used, model that's not really comparable like for like.

If we all did the sensible, we'd all have Micras and I for one, thank the man upstairs every day that we're not all sensible.

Spyder rules - end of.

It's sponsored by the road safety partnership to ensure compliance with the national speedlimit, you can have a watertightroof if you agree to have a speed tracker fitted......

I really don't like the high level brake light. I know they have to be a certain height, but it looks naff and spoils the back end for me.

I think its great and everyone saying the roof is crap.. durr if you're driving it with the roof on you're not doing it right. Granted the UK isnt really the sort of place i'd want to own one, but if i lived in the south of spain or italy or something it'd be great.

Gotta say tho this picture is a bit hypocritical;

So they've ditched the door openers to save 30? grams.. yet theres an airbag in the door which probably weighs several KGs. Its either a lightweight special or its not...

It's not a stripped out racer as its still full of airbags and heavy trim items. its no faster has a leaky roof and is more expensive. I bet they sell loads!!
