Unreal that is. Serving in the forces then gets taken out my a bloody tire in civvy street.

I am stunned that that is even possible and in light of this have negated the silly jokes as someone has died.

eek ......talk about a freak accident!

"A US air force officer who was on holiday in Scotland has died after a car tyre she was holding exploded.

Capt Jenna Wilcox, 27, was on a break with her husband when the accident happened in Dalkeith, Midlothian, on Saturday. "

Very sad tale indeed.

If I ever need to remove a bulged tyre from thw car I will be deflating it from now on.

Tragic story, but I have to say, I am generally pretty anxious in the vicinity of a tyre with a bulge in it. Obviously, it doesn't occur to everyone that it might be a good idea to keep well away, or let the air out.

it probably never entered their mind it could be fatal, probably thought it would just make a loud bang, like 99% of the public. frown

Potholes plus very high pressures in tyres nowadays (ultra low profile, low rolling resistance etc) and it's suprising it does not happen more often (explosions I mean).

My neighbour took great delight in telling me he runs his mazda 6 45 series tyres at 50psi nowadays and he gets better MPG......! I'll reming him of it when his centres wear prematurely!

Poor woman, poor husband too.

Blimey that's very sad, I can only hope that this story is seen by as many people as possible, to raise awareness of the possible outcome of circumstances such as this.

Utterly sad beyond comprehension.

Had the car got a spare wheel well big enough to hold the wheels that are fitted to the car as standard, then this wouldn't have happened.

Another reason to ban space-savers!

With hindsight (a wonderful thing), they should have deflated the tyre before leaving the scene.

Very sad indeed.

Pressure does not need to be high,I've seen a tyre cage badly damaged at about 25psi.

My tyre man from years ago told me of some horrific stories about tyre fitters being killed or injured badly, and of one who lost an eye from a flying wheel weight whilst balancing, though no doubt these days Health and safety has led to better equipment.

Possibly what could have made it worse was that it would have been heated once inside the car, increasing the pressure.

A tragedy from something which we all take for granted and maybe need to give more care to.

fk, the force from the tyres though can be huge. I was once next to a lorry on the A1 as it Expoloded, and the bang was immense, so was the dust cloud.

There is an old photo of an imprint of a person on a barn roof, it was caused when the farmer was inflating a tractor tyre without a cage and was blasted to the roof and splattered like a bug.

That is why when I park next to a truck/heavy vehicle I NEVER stay parallel to the tyre.

RIP

Tyres, hairdressing equipment etc. Life is fragile.
