No way I could look past an slk 350 for the same money, hired one last weekend took it to Scotland (girlfriends choice I am one of those macho dheads who won't drive a "girls" car unfortunately)and it blew me away...not what I expected at all..for the same money as this golf? no contest
Agreed, the Merc is a nice enough car, not my cup of tea personally, but nice. I'd go for the Boxster if I had that choice.

The only thing worth pointing out is that the SLK (like most other Mercs) comes with nothing as standard, in fact you still only get cloth seats (leather costing about £1k) so to spec to the same level as the Golf R is going to make the difference in cost quite considerable.

Golf leather seats £1815 or £3485 for recaros according to their website.

fully specced for £39,970 putting you into vauxhal vxr8, Porsche Cayman, Exige, Evo
That surprised me I have to say, what a rip-off!

Why would you bother paying for those kind of "extras" when you get them as standard in the premium VAG equivilent (S3) for less money!? Same car, same performace, better quality, better specced and about 4k cheaper?

Surely thats a no-brainer?

Nothing new here then, the R32's were always the cruising/posers choice whilst the GTi was more likely to be driven by someone with a bit of talent behind the wheel, at least int he case of the MK5. Not to offend any R32 owners but most are used as cruisers, there's a fair few near me but Ive never seen one down any of my B road haunts. Only about town, or on the dual carriageways.

At least now they have the more playful Scirocco to even out the range
Sorry but don't understand this one but it's also likely as far less R32s about.

On this logic Carrera GTs are driven by poseurs and real driver talent pops into a 911 smile
Very very nice cars by the way.

i drive a mkV r32, which is fairly modified.

i fell in love with the engine tone, and the german build quality, but have no fallen out of love with the drive. bit heavy, and bit unpredictable for "fun" driving with regards to the 4wd system.

so a 350Z next i assume...perhaps.

however a friend suggested.."why not a Golf R", my response was just laughter.

i saw one waiting at the station the other day, and he couldnt keep his eyes off. mine looks rather striking and stealthy and more of a head turner. so a bit of pedal to floor action to let that V6 sing, he'll be wondering where his 30k went!

laugh some people will buy a car on how it drives and not the perception of stylish image, i would say buying a car in an attempt to be stylish is far from classy compared to buying a car for its rarity and the way it drives.

anyway from the pics to me the golf r just looks like a golf gti with some aftermarket wheels as they really dont appear to suit the car. oh and my car didnt cost me £35k and will never lose a penny.

oh and if class means having to drive an omega or s2000, count me out. rofl

How much was your car new?

Anyway, don't take it so personally, re-instate your sense of humour bypass, I'm only taking the piss biggrin Despite them looking crap, I still like Imprezas, driven them, a great drive etc.

Perhaps the golf does drive well, although every golf i have ever driven has been nothing but boring, and now they are releasing powerful ones that still look boring. Anyway i was only commenting on topic on a thread about the golf r so i do not see what it has to do with what either of us drive. The way i see it a hot hatch should look hot.

But hot Golfs have ALWAYS looked understated (and Fords not for example). People buy the ones they prefer. Many people want the performance of a hot hatch hatch but don't want to shout about it. Neither is necessarily better than the other, just doing a similar job in a different manner.

well im not sure either r32 was understated, and as such they are the only hot golfs that have ever appealed to me. i have driven mk1 and mk2 gti`s and aways thought they felt far too brittle and delicate along with rattley as hell for my liking.

each to their own i suppose but the wheels just look far too aftermarket for something trying to be subtle, it is subtle all but the wheels that just look wrong imo.

I prefer the look of the Golf R to the Focus RS for that reason.

Same with the S3. But I need to see clients. If I turned up in a Focus RS in kermit green they'd be pissed off. Turn up in a Golf R and it wouldn't be an issue.

Not really a fair comparison there. a silver RS and a silver Golf R and no one would bat an eyelid.

both in kermit green and people would probably think they were both a bit garish

(i'm assuming the focus RS comes in more than kermit green and asbo orange)

Or if you can stick the wait, just get the RS3 - 2.5l 340hp. No idea on pricing though.

Just a shame it looks as dull as a bogo S3.

If I had £35k to spend on a car an underpowered German hatchback wouldnt be on the list.
