RE: Mercedes E-cell: The Electric SLS

If it was painted silver, had a roll cage and a set of flashing lights, Benz could use it as the F1 safety car. Which would result in a great piece of PR for MB and help shut a few of the greenies who complain about F1 up!
Would they be nervous about it lasting long enough if it was a big smash that took a while to clean up? It would have to be driven flat out and then some to give a pace similar to the petrol equivalent, and that's tedious for an F1 car...just a thought Matt Harper said:

I've never understood why none of these electric cars don't incorporate solar panels anywhere? Shirley it would help?! But obviously have a knock on it's apperance.
...Help with what exactly? Running the interior light?!A solar panel the size of the roof would probably deliver a couple of amps at best in ideal conditions.. these motors are using hundreds of amps.
It drives a 60W fan to blow air through the car, exiting through the battery pack. Its the more effective method it has for dealing with the greenhouse effect
Looking at the profile cutaways it would seem that the electric SLS would have an advantage in terms of weight distribution and centre of gravity. Assuming the kerb weights were reasonably comparable how can this, and the brutal yet infinitely controllable power delivery possibly, be a bad thing?
Someone, somewhere will sort out the energy density and charging issues and then electric cars will make our current cars look like the wheezy dinosaurs they really are. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of a decent IC engine going through the gears (and the smell of old skool petrol!) but for mainstream cars their days are numbered in the long-term except as part of a on-board charging system running at a constant speed, hardly something to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
Forza Tecnologia!

Looks like a fab road, turned the sound up and all I could here was wind, a honk from the departing Merc and chatter hairykrishna said:

I think we'll see electric cars take off the moment someone invents a battery that can be recharged in seconds, and not hours.
I don't think such a thing is all that far away. Imagine filling your car up with electricity, at a fuel station, in 5 minutes. I'd definitely have an electric car that could do that.
A battery pack that can receive >50kWh of charge in 5 minutes is a very long way away. How you even deliver that sort of power to the car in a safe manner is far from a trivial exercise.I don't think such a thing is all that far away. There are so many things, we could do with crude oil. But we are simply burning it. I mean, in winter you don't take all your bucks out of the wallet to make a proper fire, do you? Why do with a precious good like oil.
Erm. Isn't that a bad example? Most of the energy to heat your house comes from either gas or oil. So in effect yes you are burning it to keep your house warm in winter Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
