Musing on Squirrel again, I now recall his stadard line was "My Audi A4 2.0 TDi, chipped to 210 bhp..." I read that so much, it's burnt on the back of my eyes.

I recall one of Safespeed's more erudite posters demolishing his claim that this achieved a 0-60 of about 6.5 seconds by comparing it to similar size/power vehicles. Cue much backtracking.

Squirrel also had his own personal nemesis whose allotted role in life was following him from forum to forum and telling everyone what an arse he was.

I'd love to hear S Line Luxury's thoughts on the new Audi A1.

You mean the Audi that has just been beaten by some 'French heap' in a comparison done by Autocar this week??

Saw this tonight, which amused me briefly, if you went from a CTDI Civic to an S line, I quite believe that you'd think the imagine was incredible.

This reminds me: my father in law - who is a Honda Jazz/45mph/"I don't rev engines 'cos they'll break" kind of guy test drove a Civic 2.2 CTDi and declared it so overpowered as to be "dangerous".

Sounds like his pride and joy's just been smashed up by a wagon and he's had a trip in an ambulance as a result.

Carry on, eh?

My Grandad used to claim that his Micra's top speed of 90mph was 'just plain irresponsible'. Despite not being badly off at all, he would go into showrooms and ask for the cheapest, smallest, slowest, least-powerful car they had, and then try and get even more money off by deleting as many options as possible, including on occasion rear seatbelts and the radio.

Imagine there's no S-line
It's easy if you try
No carpeting below us
Above us only velour

Imagine all the Audis
Fitted without toys

Imagine there's no diesel
It isn't hard to do
No TDI torque to boast
And no power too

Imagine all the Audis
Powered by straight-fives

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day Ghia and M-Sport will join us
And executives will be as one

Imagine no air conditioning
I wonder if you can
No need for wood or leather
A brotherhood of VAG

Imagine all the Audis
Sharing the outside lane

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day S-Line Luxury will join us
And Pistonheads will be as one

Redlining a diesel?

Why?
Peak wheel torque will always be at highest RPM with lowest gear. There is an exception to this if power drops off drastically near the red line but I've never seen anything with such an appalling power curve.
VW PD engines tend to be pretty shocking after 3500/4000 rpm, as the power curve seems to fall off a cliff. Latest 2.0 model as fitted to the Golf GTD is better, still not a patch on BMW's finest however.
Sorry, forgot about this thread...

Anyway, I know the torque drops off drastically, but it's not drastic enough to make a higher gear a better choice to maintain the higher torque at the wheels. Here is a typical power graph:

It is not better to change up before the red line if you are trying to extract maximum performance.

I was driving back from Cholmedeley the other day and Imagine came on the radio. I inadvertantly found myself suffering fits of convulsive laughter upon hearing the word 'imagine', and next time I went on the thread Googled up the lyrics in a separate window and changed them accordingly while typing them out.
