A friend's dad, while being otherwise fine, has great difficulty walking.

He drives fine, the problem is that once at his destination he can't really walk around. So he'd like to have an electric scooter with him.

I've Googled it and found some platform things in the states but I'd really like to try one out with him.

The reason I'm involved is my friend has asked me to make a little trailer into a tiltbed for this scooter. I don't think towing a trailer everywhere is a good idea really.

Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that someone my parents knew had some sort of crane system fitted to their big Volvo estate for excactly this.

You can get small lightweight travel scooters, otherwise has he looked into shopmobility schemes, I know in some areas you can ring in advance and they will have a charged scooter waiting near your parking space.

There are a number of specialist coachbuilders who do this sort of thing, though generally it is for wheelchair users as those full size mobility scooters are pretty big and heavy so getting them over a standard boot lip is the effort. They used to use those car versions of the berlingo type things, no idea what they offer now. Not very cheap though.

Agree that towing a trailer everywhere is not the most practical solution.

Yeah, I know about the shopmobility places, problem is we're out in the sticks here and there's nothing like that around.

I'll check the lightweight scooters out but he still has to get it in the car somehow.

Thanks for replies.

This company definitely used to have a dealer or two in the UK - their products are very popular in the US.

Another manufacturer that makes good mobility products is Harmar Mobility, in Sarasota FL

My grandparents have exactly that for an electric wheelchair. Motorised arm that swings in and out of the back of their Nissan X-Trail then lifts/lowers the folded up wheelchair.

IIRC they originally got the car on Motability but bought it at the end of the lease to privately fit the lift.

surely somehthing like a berlingo is perfect, low rear boot with a nice light weight ramp, then just us a spare seatbelt bolted somewhere sensible to tether it

Best the OP's friend actively avoids any S-line Audi as the poor bugger already has trouble walking, the concrete suspension might just finish him off! hehe

what if you could make a scooter faster, so that you didn't need the car? chip it and give it some beefy batteries, perhaps a roll cage and a bit of a weight loss programme.

My father in law has something a bit like this: folding scooter

Fits into the boot of his Corsa when folded. I suppose the only addition he could do with would be an in-car charger (and a power socket in the boot) so that it charges the battery as he drives.
