My first accident, 15-20 years ago, I got rear-ended on the offside corner on a DC by an impatient tt in a people carrier that couldn't wait for me to move out of his way and misjudged his approach speed.

...I found myself doing the same as the OP, while spinning the wheel from lock to lock a few times as quickly as I could to save the tank-slapper he punted me into.

I did rescue the car, somehow (no driver aids...this was a DC2 I'd only had for maybe 6 months), and like the Insignia driver above it felt like big angles, but in reality it was probably only half what it felt like and was over in a few seconds.
I did see some spectacularly aggressive dickish driving last night over 5 hours on the M1 (Derbs-N.London and back)

20 years ago I'd have got wound up by some knob tailgating at 80mph, and would have taken off like a Cat with a Rottie up it's chuff. Now I instead swing left and let them have their accident elsewhere (100% not implying the punt was your fault)

now this is where dashcam footage is good for you! Whatever, glad 'nothing serious' happened (besides needing new undercrackers)
Yes, completely. Figured our Nextbase wasn't holding footage recently. Otherwise I would have nominated myself to the st driving caught on cam thread, for pushing on a bit knowing it was windy, eager to get home after a long drive.

He wasn't tailgating...he just didn't slow down enough (barrelling up at >>100mph behind me - had his young daughter in the car too!) to allow me to pull in after overtaking. I'd clocked him approaching and didn't really think twice about him until the split second before he hit me.

I worried I was going to be here last night. M1, near Leicester last night, clear traffic, 80ish MPH (awaits our Brake members....) lane 4 just overtook a car. Suddenly a gust caught the back end of the car (which must be 1.7 tonnes?) and pushed the car diagonally to near 45 degrees. For a second or two my forward view was of the central reservation, and I really thought I was about to have a big one. Straightened up after (probably) a far smaller unit of time than it felt, but it woke me up somewhat!
I suspect both the angle and the time were far smaller than it felt, but I'm sure it was terrifying all the same!
Agree with both, but I specifically recall my forward view was of the Armco. I guess it's how good modern traction control is, had I been in one of my early cars without it I suspect the outcome could have differed!
I was getting overtaken by lorries on the motorway in the Tuscan yesterday - it felt very sketchy in the cold and wet (not so much on the motorway but on the b-roads before I got onto it), and I wished I had some of that modern traction control!

Jeez yes with some of the weather this weekend can't have been much fun in a Tuscan.

Reminds me of my trip down the East Coast of the US, hired a Camaro and on the way back to JFK drove through a 5 hour torrential downpour where if I went near the throttle it started kicking out - crawled along at 30 mph odd being overtaken by massive lorries.

Eons ago in the mistaken belief of my immortality I pulled out to overtake on near freezing cobbles (998 Imp on crossplies!) and performed a full 360° pirouette into the gap in front - my luck was in that day.

Did similar more recently at Thruxton in a Cayman and the instructor was decidedly unimpressed - I blame Tiff Needell dicking about sideways in an M4 behind us but I digress. RWD is clearly not my thing. smile

I had an overnight event on Friday evening and I had promised my colleague a lift in the Tuscan. I was going to take a different car had the storm arrived with a vengeance but on Friday the weather was okay so rather than disappoint, took the Tuscan. It was fine on Friday, but freezing temperatures and damp roads on Saturday morning made the journey home quite eventful!

I did accidentally enter the car park sideways on Friday - country hotel, damp gravel driveway, and gave it a bit of misjudged beans to show off to my colleagues on the way in. Caught it though and I think they thought I did it deliberately; the concierge was not very impressed biglaugh

£11,500 from what I recall.

I read that as cat B. In which case buying it back wouldn’t have let him do what he wanted anyway. I could be wrong in my interpretation though smile
Yes it was Cat B which is break for parts only.
Pity as I reckon I could have drilled and tapped the crankcase, bought a s/h set of crash bars, tank and subframe and had it back on the road for less than a grand.

Oh well it gave me an excuse to order a new 1250 for March.

2015 Insignia Estate, 2.0 Cdti. Yep, a Vauxhall eek

edit to add, yep, not a bad guess at the weight, 1733kg. Our car, except Elite Nav not tech, so a few more toys to increase the weight, marginally - https://www.thetowcarawards.com/tow-car/vauxhall-i...

I like the insignia, my old Man has the same car as you albeit a year older! I’ll tell him to ease off a bit in strong winds! hehe

I do too. It's not perfect (no car is) but it's quick (295lb torque, your old mans had the older version engine IIRC, a bit down on this) fully loaded, and most importantly near 100% reliable over 96k miles. I've become a bit attached to it TBH, even if I don't deeply 'love' it, or get excited by it, if that makes sense? It's an honest decent car all said. Vauxhall bashing on PH is both boring and dumb.

Going back quite a few years.
This 2.8 injection Capri was spotted at my local Ford dealer,
Apparently the driver lost control at high speed on the motorway and ended up slamming into a concrete bridge support backwards.
Amazingly he survived.

That looks like something from the PC car deformation simulator Beam NG.

Yep, and these days the only way to get around the Cat. B is to cancel your insurance claim altogether and repair it out of your own pocket. Been there, argued that.

If we're doing really old ones and Capris

My 2.1S capri, Black Beastie
Before

After

We were heading the the Classic Ford show at Stoneleigh, got up towards Warwick and a BMW 3 series decided he didn't have to wait for me to cross the roundabout and entered stage left as I was crossing, punting the rear of the car which spun me off the road, onto the wet grass where I had no grip and watch the car slid into the bush - and then take out the 4 bar fence behind it.

We climbed out the bush and the BMW had stopped, but quickly scarpered as I walked towards him.

Wrote the car off, bent the front chassis bar, as well as everything wrecked at the front..

Absolutely gutting, what a lovely car. Did you manage to catch up with the BMW owner to claim on insurance? Any Police involvement?

First and only (more through luck than skill) crash of my motoring career. Apologies for the poor quality polaroid image but it was back in the mists of time before I got my Zenit B SLR.

RWD and crossply tyres made for the full Ari Vatanen experience which I enjoyed immensely on numerous snow closed roads. Never did get stuck back then as the roads were so quiet that there was hardly any need to slow down and you could batter your way through the deeper stuff - until you couldn't...

Steep hill.
First rain in weeks.
1/4 ton of soil in the back.

I was doing about 15-20.
XC90 came the other way.

Hit the brakes & ABS just chattered.
Realised I wasn’t going to stop so decided to nose into the hedge rather than hit her.

My Ranger climbed the bank the rolled on to her bonnet.

Rather embarrassingly the attending police officer was a girl I quite liked from school, but in my pre-occupied state failed to recognise her even when she prompted me.

Not a good morning.

Sold it to a mate who managed to straighten the roof & A pillar, got a screen in & tidied up the rest.

Then it blew it’s head gasket & it turned out to be full of K-Seal after all.
