I've only driven an M6 once and it was a LHD one in France on some great roads but I struggle to like them. So complicated and heavy-handed and such huge performance but delivered in such an anaesthetised way. Not for me.
Just going to check Dave to see if those were his EXACT words or a slight deviation of them...
The complicated thing came from Clarkson. Sure, iDrive was a mess, but you could set the car up in half an hour, one time. The M button was programmable for all your settings and you just hit it to engage. There was nothing particularly complex about the car. SMG was clunky but you could drive it smoothly once you got used to it. he car was not a track car and was underbraked for that purpose. I was and is a great and comfortable road car, and brilliantly quick.
Ours took 10 mins to set-up so we can dial M for MONSTER!!! smile

RS4?

Can't even remember how long the current RS4 has been around. Might not have been long.

The RS4 died a death about 2 years ago I think. They phased it out when the B8 A4 came in.
So it did, shows how much I care (or don't) hehe

Not 100% attractive, but the most impressive beast on the roads!
Next to it, Ferraris are just plain rectangular flat cars.

Yep. I found it takes a while to really find it's capabilities. Whilst I agree it looks a bit odd for me the comfort and practicality blended with the perfomance are hard to beat.

agreed, when they first came out i didnt like them, now i love the looks. Hard top looks better than rag top. Only ever driven a 645 but still, awesome bit of kit. All the moans about Idrive are from people that have never used it, once you get used to it, its pretty easy to navigate!

Hmm... I would say the gearbox takes getting used to, but that's mainly at low/loafing speeds when you may have selected its laziest setting. Then you can easily find yourself wishing you were in a more responsive setting exiting a junction, or entering a roundabout, etc. because it can feel positively ponderous waiting for a gear to engage if you're aiming for a smallish gap in the traffic. It takes a while to get used to driving around that 'foible', which is why first acquaintance with the car can be deceptive - or downright off-putting for some.

When you've ratcheted up the settings to something fiercer, the box runs through the gears really snappily on the paddle shift, although the action isn't anything like as clean as latest double-clutch autos which are eerily seamless. Call me old-fashioned, but I quite like that really, as the 'best in class' gearboxes are often lacking in character if not efficiency.

(Efficiency isn't everything, is it - or have I got the old rose-tinted specs again? I think some of the team might argue...) smile

Anyway, it's a funny old beast. The longer we have it the more I like and respect it. Often it works the other way, especially when you're lucky enough to get into many different cars.

Er...no.

And I'm a fan of neither (an anti-fan of both) though suspect at the right money in ten years time, the M6 might be a good buy.

I fear that IT engineers have got closer to the accountants at BMW than the M Engineers. The M5 / M6 as cars were amazing, yes the fuel tanks were about 50 litres too small but the electronics blunted the engines ability and cost cutting at the top end hurt sales.

BMW need to make cars that out perform the opposition both on the road and on the track. Better brakes, better suspension settings for varying global markets and less technology for owners to moan about. Road, track and off....how hard is that??

The M6 was never designed to be a track car, so I dont' think it should really be judged that way. I have GT3RS's for the track which are well suited, but for a long road trip the M6 is ideal. I do wish it had a 90 litre tank, but nothing is perfect.

Seriously, it was butt ugly. Might be good at what it did but so was the Fiat Multipla. They both got beat with the ugly stick. Twice.

The same here. For the first month or so I started to think I'd made a big mistake but I really like it now (1 year on). On the gearbox settings - I drive everywhere with it set to S5, M and non-M modes. I think it's fine except if the car is cold when it feels awful. M mode is about 100 x better though. S6 is ok for a once in a while blast but it feels like the box is going to explode to me hehe
