RE: SOTW: Mk1 Toyota MR2
Discussion
Great shed, have had mine for 3 years now and only paid 550 for it. It's got obligatory rust so something or other needs welding for the MOT every year (which isn't actually that expensive to get done), but other than that has been completely reliable. It's done 4 track days now, and is just great fun to drive.
I don't think I could get a cheaper car to run really, can insure it on a classic policy for £100 year, it's not depreciating (in fact probably slightly appreciating), so the only real costs are getting it through it's mot every year.

Had one of these for 4 years and yes it did rot in all the usual places and suffered from crap build up in the cooling system just needed the arch plates you can buy from the drivers or owners club, welding into place and the cooling system flushing through and it was a gud un.
But you have to ask how many other cars are still on the road from that 84 period, the answer is not many.
You can even shoe horn a 2 litre or 2 litre turbo Mk 2 engine into that tiny hole. see the web site twobrutal.com i seem to recall reading that they had managed to stick a 3.5ltr V6 lump into a MK1, better make sure you upgrade on brakes though.

I have had mine now for getting on the best part of 10 years and it is a car you can find yourself getting attached to, for all the reasons listed above.
I just had mine evaluated for the classic car insurance and for insurance purpose is cam in at £3000 which was a suprise for the good.
I went out to the 'ring it last weekend, 1300 mile round trip, and once I got the hang of doing a dry lap it was quick enough in the corners to keep the bikes behind.
All in all, a good shed, but I'm a bit biased. I do understand the "marmite" looks thing though.

Mate had one of these at Uni - top car - willing engine - tidy handling. How did Toyota manage to bugger the concept up so far on the next ietration of MR2?
I've always wanted an MR2, closest I ever got was an AE82 Corolla GT. Same engine, and boy - was it willing. Could easily live at the red line all day (and in first it would hit over 8k before being pegged back to the red line of around 7800), and yet would easily pull in 5th gear from 1000 rpm.Bought a UK spec one and loved it so much that when the dreaded rot took hold I chucked it and got an ex race jdm supercharged version which surprisingly was very peaky.
I have very fond memories of that car and I'm glad that a friend of mine still owns it. Albeit stored in his garage.

Great shed. I miss mine despite the fun I've had in Caterhams since.

Yep, I duct taped the entire t-bar last winter to see if I could stop the leaking, no chance!
I used a bead of silicone sealant which kept the worst at bay (IIRC there are some drains that need clearing too??). If you let it dry before refitting the roof it's still useable.Kentish said:
Anyone else expecting to see a thread about Kylie?
Glad everyone seems to like my little find! The "spinning around" alluded to in this image is appropriate as sadly i havent owned one since i killed my old Mr. 2 this way trying to impress a girl coming off a wet oily roundabout!url]|http://thumbsnap.com/74iK3ITB[/url]
Honestly dont think you can have more fun for the money. A mint orignal one gets loads of postive attention and has doubled in re sale value since i lost mine 2 years ago. The engine sounded great on the cam change, my t-bar really didnt leak the trick was to treat it regularly with fairy liquid to expand and keep the seals supple. For those looking to take the plunge following the buys guides available on the ownerclub website is a wise move rot in front cross beam member is a killer...
just some linkage for anyone who wants to know more about mk1s..

there's a good mk1 crowd on IMOC too

Shame the ad is expired - I'm after a car and this looks clean enough. If it were near enough to me and still for sale I'd be looking at it this weekend. I assume the car has now sold but if you're the seller, still have it and are reading this, please pm me.
It was in southern scotland. I only realised after i'd told riggers about it on wednesday that the ad was 29 days old... so dont think its sold! However its out of the way which probably explains why it's so cheap for a low mileage rot free example!YAY great SOTW.
I love my shed, I have a blue MK1, it is unmolested and well after a bit of brake work has passed its MOT.
I do love it, great drive, the pop up lights never stop entertaining me I love the Tbar roof, I love the engine noise, I love the handling, I love everything
It also never fails to impress mostly ten year old boys, I have been yelled at from groups of kids what a cool car it is, always gets attention. I just wished they made this car still so I could have a new version with P/S.
