Last time I saw one of these was on Traffic Cops (or similar) being chased around Salford. Apparently these were the car of choice of the local scrotes for burglaries due to their pace and space (and lack of security).
Actually its the vehicle of choice for one of the gangs as daily transport, not just burglaries !soxboy said:

....and due to the 9000 being built like the proverbial brick shuse for use as a ram-raiding tool.Agent Orange said:

Actually there's nothing remotely 'quirky' about the 9000..... as it was a joint Saab-Fiat(Lancia-Alfa) project
A joint Saab/Fiat/Lancia/Alfa surely is the definition of quirky!! I see your point but........ I was hinting at the fact by that exact definition, the 9000 didn't have any of the normal Saab 'quirk's' associated with the brand.

If memory serves me correct it was called the Euro chassis.there was the Saab 9000,Lancia Thema and Fiat Croma all built on the same chassis, very similiar cars to look at yet so different
Tipo 4 indeed... only thing is Saab and the Italians went their separate ways quite early in the development cycle to the point that the count of interchangeable parts is zero... Saab needed to account for future US safety regulations, and had their own philosophy on suspension development (especially regarding consistent grip levels and on-limit behaviour on low-friction surfaces; Saab always sets their chassis up driving on ice initially, gradually working towards dry tarmac) which saw the 9000 employ a dead-beam rear axle with Watts linkage and Panhard rod as per previous models where Alfa/Lancia/Fiat went for semi-trailing arms IIRC.Edited by 900T-R on Friday 13th August 14:04
Many years a go I worked with a guy who was fed up with his Megane and asked me what car he should get so I suggested a Saab. I owned a black Saab 900 Turbo 16S (Wish I still had it, way better than my 9-5). A week or so later he turned up with an '89 9000 Carlsson, god was it quick, my 900 was quick but his carlsson made it look sloth like.

Mine were all badged as bog standard 2.0i injection models in hope that they would be left aloneGood shed...I still miss my old 2.0 Turbo SE. Bullet proof engines and the most comfy seats I have ever sat in. It had stupendous mid-range for a big car, and somehow it still averaged 30mpg!
The bodies were also galvanised IIRC, although the auto box is a weak spot. And the headlining usually falls off.

Here's one of the same colour, though this one is immaculate:
Roof mounted safety camera dispenser optional
[Pedant mode]
The 2.3 Carlssons were 220BHP.
[/Pedant mode]
My old Carlsson felt a lot quicker than my current 250BHP 9-5 Aero. Still the quickest car mid range I've driven. (Only other quick cars I've driven are a standard Sierra Sapphire Cosworth, and a Focus ST2).
This looks like my old one:
I liked the bodykits - made the car look like a slow car with a silly body kit, though mine was double bluffing

I have one as a track car
what you say ,that old barge
well at marham last time it was embarrasing some people round the twisty bits
especially in the rain
cars were spinning off trying to keep in front of it
And its only done 260,000 miles .....

One of these has to be the fastest car you can possibly buy, for the least money.
I can't think of any others apart from an old Granada Scorpio Cosworth for £600 I saw somewhere ...
I like the 9000, but I have 4 900's and I can't possibly be any happier with any other car.
(Plus I am left handed and the ignition barrel is in the wrong place for me!)

Good car. I recall they advertised it as "the world's fastest car" (in 5th gear between 2 certain speeds (50-70?)) as it was pretty much the only turbo
engined 'normal' car.
seem to remember from motoring press something about 2.3 carllson being quicker than a testarossa between 50/70 in third thus making a comendable shed choice.Good car. I wanted a fast 9000 when I was a lad.
A few years ago I was on the look-out for a quick, practical car and I had a test-drive of a late-model 9000 Aero.
It was rubbish. Admittedly, it was a few years old, but the handling was shocking. I went with an Octavis vRS which was superb.
Probably a knackered version then, they don't handle as well as the 900 with it's double wishbone front suspension but decent enough.
I drove a friend's 9-5 Aero HOT and that wasn't much better and it had ridiculous levels of wheelspin. My Octavia vRS (pre-remap) could keep up until 80mph and used a lot less fuel.
I own both a 9-5 Aero HOT (250) and a 9000 2.3 LPT. The 9000, though a little saggy these days, has a much better ride/handling combination than the newer 9-5, tidy, pliant and predictable. The 9-5 Aero on the other hand can be a bit evil, especially in the wet. As for fuel, I average 35mpg from the 9-5 Aero, what did you see from the Octavia?A few years ago I was on the look-out for a quick, practical car and I had a test-drive of a late-model 9000 Aero.

Partly this is down to torque, the 2.3L turbo produces nice amounts of torque relatively low down in the rev range. Saab also extolled the virtues of this for "safe overtaking" on B roads
