A refresher. I've mentioned it before but it may be worth a re-run. My mates and I got into cars at much the same time but some of us were more car oriented than others.

"My car's blown up."
"What happened?"
"The engine stopped."
"Any warning?"
"An orange light came on on the dashboard."
"What did you do?"
"Put a duster in front of it."
"Because?"
"It was very bright."

Three weeks he ran it with little or no oil pressure before the engine gave up.

I googled it. The 125bhp 1.8 petrol I found has 125lb/ft of torque, which is 170nm.
If you meant the 1.8 turbodiesel, the 125bhp one puts out 236lb/ft which is 320nm, but that's a 6-speed.

Went with a colleague to a client meeting in her 16v Citroen ZX. She drove. On the way back she asked me to (company car). After a few miles we had to join a Motorway, and in 3rd gear I accelerated to >6500rpm down the sliproad.

She said "What are you doing? Its never made that noise before".

Had similar when I first drive the MILs 1400cc polo. Joining the m1 off meadowhall junction, 3rd, foot to floor waiting for any of the nearly dead ponies to do something... Heading for redline and OH looked panicked before asking if I was killing it

Should have told her that it's only once it reaches infinity (and beyond) rpm then the car becomes a write off.

I can't remember if my reply was that or: "you're stting me right?"

Let's just say they last 3 years have been a transformation for her with regards attitude to cars.

She used to think her ex's 1.8vvti Celica was a "license loser" FFS

She thought it was turbod.

Giving her the keys to a 370bhp 200sx was a hilarious event.. And the xk8 not much better!

3 years on and she's now becoming scarily PH

yes Bloke at work had the standard engined one, could not understand how I kept overtaking him on the uphill slip road out of work into the A303. "This is a proper sports car that's just an old Peugeot".

The 205GTI 1.9? I'm impressed. How reliable has it been? I've bought a 106GTI recently and I'm quite hypochondriac about it.

Er, could have been better. But then I was using it for 15,000 miles a year, and it hit 190,000 total. But then the mx-5 and Octy vRS I got to replace it didn't fare much better....

Anyway, hardly surprising it was was quicker. Rebuilt engine making 138.9 bhp in a sub-900kg car vs a very similar amount of power in a much heavier car. Plus of course my amaze driving skillz etc. wink

My 70 something mum "Steven stop it, stop it, stop it" then she started crying. Her first ride in my 500SL Mercedes, booting it out of the village onto the long straight NSL road.

He didn't have the 'Vtec just kicked in yo!' engine and therefore was definitely a probable queer wink

His mum could be like my mum though, anything over 3000rpm when an engine starts increasing it's noise levels is "silly revving/dangerous/trying to kill us/stupid" etc and anything over 5000rpm is not even worth the trouble.

My mum like many people is of the opinion NOISE = SPEED.

My MIL starts on about how "she's the only person on earth not addicted to speed" when any driver dares to exceed 40mph. She relaxes that to 45mph on motorways.

My own personal version of this is whenever I go above maybe 3000 revs or so when accelerating, OMG SLOW DOWN OMG... then when I do, cause I'm nice like that... "I was only joking". Not sure if serious...

yes

Mine too. So it my father when passenger too, yet not as driver.

So are a lot of people my parents generation (45year old to 60year old).

Had a few cars with SS exhausts etc, and any form of rev-band use gets tutting or such.

For me it said it all that when I did IAM I was praised for all the things that my mother whines at me about hehe

Though the instructor who owned a Focust ST with 220+BHP, 3year old and 11k on the clock yet had never had it past 95mph may have regretted saying: "what'll this thing do then?" when in the passenger seat of my 200SX. evil

2nd, boot it, whooooosh.... wait.... whooooosh... noise...... bring me the horizon!

He complimented my overtake and knowledge of where my power was etc, but seemed somewhat alarmed by the power-delivery method
