Do we reckon the RX8's successor will ditch the rotary? If they plan to build a practical, affordable RWD 2+2 coupe with a sensible engine I might even be tempted to part with some cash...
Think about what the R stands for!!
hehe

Good point. They can call it whatever they like if it's got the RX8s pace and handling in a slightly more reliable/frugal package.
New Rotary on the way (we hope).

Yeah - If you want a BMW (2+2 RWD) buy one!

If you want something different go with an RX - Why do so many people want to make every car exactly the same?

I hate Nissan Micras, but I don't want them to become RWD V8 coupes so I can change my mind! biggrin

I don't get Mazda, they produce some stunning design concepts, but seem to miss the mark when the concept ideas are carried across to the final production vehicles.

I'm looking forward to seeing how that front end language translates into the 4th Gen MX5. Could be a looker.

All manufacturers are like that.

I mean this VW didn't exactly get up and running

Concept cars are like catwalk fashion. You will not find them on the high street. But you might see a few hints and colours in 6 months time.

Chris - why on heavens earth would you want to stop making rotaries!? Mazda have put real heart and spirit into that technology (which is special for a Japanese company). We should be trying to keep it going and developing it's an interesting engine hurrah for Mazda!

Technology is getting to the point now where manufactures can make some interesting shapes, just look at the new Range Rover Evoque, that pretty close to the concept.

New design language? Looks pretty much identical to their current design language if you ask me. Front & rear lights, grille, waistline - all could be on a 2006 Mazda concept.

May be they should tap Ford for some tips on how to *really* reboot their designs as Henry's boys (at least the European ones) seem to have managed this at least two or three times in the last 30 years (jellymold Sierra, New Edge etc.)

That looks great. Sort of like an Aston/Jag/Maserati that's been breathed on by a Pokemon sketch artist. Makes BMW's flame-look seem very watered down. Now they just need to build it...as is.

I think it looks great. The sweeping lines would be great to see in a "run of the mill" car. In a shortened version I think it would look even better. Go for it Mazda.

Folks you realise that a concept is just that. Its not saying we are going to make this, they are trying to things, testing how its received, learning and getting some new ideas.

… increasingly I am seeing student projects being presented as concepts from the companies themselves by various bloggers etc.
It’s the lazy journalism that is to blame there. That, combined with the rise of t’Internet as a place for student designers to show off their work.

The rear end of that car looks just like a modern interpretation of the Pininfarina 406 Coupe...

I'm loving this (even though some might say the front end is a bit of a Jag rip-off), it definitely is a very agreeable design - let's hope they doesn't dilute it too much... Well done Mazda!
Well to be fair, the new xk8 is more of an Aston Martin rip-off.

About the shinari, I think it's absolutely beautiful. I love what Mazda have done with the 3 and 6. Definetly more interesting than their rivals
I actually meant the new XJ... But I agree that the XK8 takes from the Aston Martin.

If they build that, they'll sell loads. But they won't. After all, they never built any cars with their last "design language". There were some stunning concepts like the Furai and Fuko, or something, but the crazy bodywork didn't ever translate to production.
Yes it looks very Jag XJ, Maserati GT, Rapide, etc., but that's the style of the moment. Looks very similar to the Infiniti Essence concept from recently, as well.

Thought it was a Jag at first glance confused Very similar, or is that just me?

its a good looking car and if it looks like that when on sale (doubtfull) and is cheapish they should sell ok.

I so hope they make it, I've had the chance to see the rest of the pics now and its stunning. With any other badge we'ed be ordering now, not worrying if they will make it or not.

Any? Really?

Like I said, of all the japanese manufacturers, imho Mazda is the most likely one to put something like this in production.
Of course it's going to be toned down, the question is: how much?

Why is it always the same when the rotary is mentioned. Bad fuel economy, put a normal engine in...etc

The rotary for a 1.3 you could consider poor economy, or for a naturally aspirated 1.3 engine 231BHP is amazing. Depends on which figure you want to shout about the most.

Put it this way it has few moving parts to create friction losses and internal heat. Its compact, light, and can run any igniteable fuel. The current renessis 1.3 is to be killed off due to emissions, but the next gen renessis is 1.6L, with direct injection, more torque, and lower emissions.
Because its compact it can be installed low, and right back in the engine bay which means the car designs don't have the ugly front ends that most new cars have to forfeit to meet new pedestrian safety laws.

The rotary is what makes the RX8, and the predessors special.

A 2 door shortened version of this with the new 16X would be my idea of affordable nirvana.

Bit late to this thread, but I was pouring over the pic in evo last night and read that a new 6 is due in 2012. I assume this is a design exercise and some of the 'language' will be used in new models frown

If they did make a car that looked 80-90% like this they'd be really moving the game on in a big way (for mazda) - sadly I think such a move would be deemed counter productive by the calculator jockeys.

Anyway I love it!
