this is from a time when BMW made lovely cars , not the horrible things they make now, a true classic these

cant see an X1 X3 X5 X6 (surely the ugliest car produced recently) 1 series 3 series 5 series etc ever being classics or remotely desirable now let alone in 15 years

2002 anyone???

Hi guys,

Sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere in this thread, but I felt the need to point out some mistakes in the vendors 635csi advert which have then been found in the PH write-up.

Firstly, the power output of a 635csi is 218bhp not 184. The latter output is the rating for the smaller and less powerful 628csi. Secondly, post 1983 cars had 4spd automatic gearboxes rather than the 3spd this car is advertised as having. I believe this box also featured a multi-mode sports, economy and manual function too.

These really are superb cars with bullet-proof mechanicals. However, sorting corrosion out can be financially ruinous and is probably not worth doing on a non-highline or manual car because there are so many better std autos out there. I would look at it as a great car to run until the MOT runs out and then break to save other rarer variants out there. Could also help turn the buyer a profit to boot!

I am looking into the feasibility of manufacturing (in conjunction with a top restoration company) repair sections for the most common area IE: the front wing section behind the lights where the mud gets caught (there is a modification using Volvo plastic wheel arch trim that can be done in order to remey the initial design fault of having no protection) as a bond-in 3D section that will replace the affected area.
Still working on it though, but it will be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new wing.

I can probably answer that for you - as someone who'd love one but probably would never buy one.

6's are one of those cars we've been scared into loving from afar. Theres the issue of which one (you might want a manual Highline but FINDING one may not be so easy) and then there's the tales of rust and obscure parts which cost more than your kid's education are widespread. When added to the general adage that "if it's a BMW it's 3 times more expensive anyway" leaves us looking at other options for a classic smoker...

Mind you, I noticed this in the PH Classifieds and realised if I had the cash I'd buy it just to LOOK at it...

That may be the perception, but in reality it's quite far from the truth. As long as you get anything with the M30 3.5L lump, there's not much chance of getting something with a duff engine, and if you did, you could buy another motor for about £300. The later E24 cars are based on the E28 chassis (early ones on the E12) and share most of the underpinnings as well as a lot of parts on E34's. So parts are plentifull and more importantly, cheap. It is really only the front wings which are the issue. The rust that occurs in other areas is no worse than on any other car. Interiors hold up well, electrics are pretty good, so there should be no reason why this is any more expensive to run than an E30 once the front wings are sorted.

Until July I was agnostic about BMWs, then, between cars I took a look at an Alpina B9 Coupe. This was Alpina's take on the E24 6 series. Instantly I was hooked. The B9 gets 245 bhp, the usual Alpina handling, trim and cosmetic upgrades and turns the potent, refined 635CSi into a phenomenal machine for covering distance and dispatching traffic. Mine is a manual and recently gave a good account of itself round Castle Combe. The M is a true M car - higher revving and shorter geared, but through torque matched to higher gearing and an LSD, the B9 is FAST!

It's so good that I have now bought an E36 328 as my daily drive.

It's amazing just how much car £1000 will buy. My experience (so far) and research leads me to believe that running costs are laughably low for what was - in period - a Ferrari and 911 rival. £270 for an inspection II at a specialist? Yes please...

Love these cars so much it hurts, pity my commute and lack of parking means i can't indulge. Tempted to join that classiccarclub just so i can sample their M635.

Some superb cars, that nogaro silver msport is lush.

Very early 635CSi, and not a speck of rust on it anywhere. Probably the car I most regret selling (out of many!)

Dads M635.

Has taken me to Le Mans and back 5 years in a row. Absolutely adore it. Yes its cost him some money, but the sound of that straight 6 howling to the red line is intoxicating.

I think this is true, but only to a point.

For example, I had my first 6er about 5 years ago and it developed a problem in the way the engine and the auto gearbox talked to each other. It took my local garage hours and hours to try to resolve, and in the end it went to a more expensive specialist who solved it in a couple of hours.

This time round, I'm determined to trust mine to someone who really knows the foibles of these great cars.

The 'Six' is a great motor but it's hard to find a good one these days. Like everything else, you get what you pay for. I've owned my highline for about 14 years and, despite being one of the better offerings available in 1997, it still swallowed £14k in 2002 to get it into a decent condition. Eight years later and it's beginning to show the signs of needing some funds spent again.





Still turns heads more than most and being white seems to be in vogue again (for the time being).
