Always loved the E24 6 Series - has one of the best looking front ends ever on a BMW. Roper mean looking car.

Nice howl from the M30 big-blocks.

Nearly bought one 5 years ago... Dolphin Grey, late-spec Highline model. Problem was it was an absolute rotter when I went to see it, bad arches, front wings with several rust holes on them!

This SOTW not the best colour for a 6 Series, would look better in the darker colours, like Diamond Black, or even a Misano Red one would look very tasty. But, it's an early-80s model, so looks period for that time.

A nice set of 17" BBS Alloys from an 8 Series will finish the look nicely!

Good SOTW - well done!

Didn't the 3430cc have around 215bhp?
Rushing to the office as we speak...
Yes I thought 185 was too low and a quick google gives 215bhp

Bloody rare to find an ad under estimating bhp
So many different figures out there but as this one probably has lost a few along the way, we'll leave it as it is and you can insert a figure of your own choice smile
I think the UK-quoted figure was 211 bhp for these. IIRC they share the same engine as the E34 535i's, E32 735i's, etc.

The 0-60mph time of 7.4 seconds quoted in the article is for the manual 635csi, the auto does it in a more leisurely 8.4 seconds.

I actually sent off a clipped coupon from a magazine to BMW in about 1983 or 84 for information about the 6 series, and got an invitation to call and arrange a test drive

they sent me (amongst other stuff) a magazine article test comparing the M635CSi favourably to the Porsche 928, Merc 500SEC and Jag XJS V12

I was very impressed with it at 14 years old

That was the league in which this was competing back in the day. I think the M635csi were as expensive as, if not more expensive, than some Porsches and Ferraris of the era.

Had this on my desktop for a while......

Doesn't this belong to a PH'er?

(apart form the obvious give away in the windscreen)

Years ago I had a diamond black '81 635CSi with 5 speed Getrag 'dog-leg' gearbox. Absolutely brill car. For their time, they were very quick at the lights and could cruise all day @ 100 without breaking into a sweat. MPG about 12-15 at that speed.

The official bhp figure for these cars was 218PS according to my BMW 6 series sales brochure.

Incidently, I used to use Avon TRX tyres on both my 6 series and subsequently 2 E28 M535i's I owned and the Avon's were great tyres. IIRC the whole point of the TRX system was one of safety where if the tyre suddenly deflated, it would stay on the rim of the wheel - or something like that.

Regards
Nick

A pointless comment really, but I have a 1/18 scale model of an early silver 635csi on my desk at work. By Anson.

Just thought I would mention it!

That's the car I mentioned earlier - well at least I'm pretty sure it is. The one belonging to the bloke who lives round the corner from me has a registration plate beginning 'LDZ'.

Would look better on its original reg instead of a cheapo Paddy Privvy!
