I was considering replacing my E39 with an E63 M6 but the E39 makes driving more of an event.Much better car to drive and look at.
Absolute rubbish.the E39 M5 is a handsome car, but it's not as purposeful looking as the M6. sure, IMO, the M6 is reasonably ugly, but that's sort of why i like it. it doesn't try to be pretty, but it's quite menacing. i saw one saturday along the M4 heading towards cardiff and it was quite something special. it does stand out.

I have been running 645 ci for nearly 2 years now, bought in 2005 for 21 k with 26k miles. Driven 9000 trouble free miles, bargain buy, service and tax costs cheaper then our Volvo xc90, great 2nd car. Yes it needs BMW warranty as if anything does go wrong it will pay for it self. Does near 30 mpg on long runs but teens on short runs but its not meant to be a green machine. Love the sound of the V8, very quick for a large barge and provided you have dynamic ride then goes around corners as well!
The run flats cost a bomb at 300 quid per corner so that’s something to watch for. As for looks yes it’s a marmite car but I am amazed how many people come up to me at petrol stations ferries etc and admire the car. So if you want a bargain GT touring machine this is the one to buy the E24 is lovely but I suspect would be very costly to run due to rust, lack of spares etc. If money was no object the M635 csi in mint condition would be great but it is a 20 plus year old car and it will cost accordingly.
Also pistonheads review was not that bad: http://www.pistonheads.com/roadtests/doc.asp?c=100...

I think this is probably one of the most underated models as still quick but great economy (34mpg average) and really low servicing costs once you get away from the dealer network.
Really love my 6 series so it's coming to Australia with us...

Absolute rubbish.Funny how few slate the even worse version in the CSL.
Funnier still how people who actually own the damn things manage to live with them and somehow go on to extract the benefit.
As ever, don't let facts sully the reality.

CarbonM5 I know you like your car but to compare it with an e63/e64 is to deny anything has moved on since The Backstreet Boys.
We have an E92 M3 aswell so Iam not just baised to one car.Agreed the SMG is annoying at times but most great cars have massive flaws, it adds to the charm.
My M635 wearing it's metrics... I've got another set of sensible sized wheels & tyres as well. Almost all spares are easily (if not always that cheaply!) available from BMW Mobile Tradition. Rust is an issue, but most of the rot spots are well known (front wings, sunroof drains, rear lights). www.bigcoupe.com is a great resource for help
Wonderful car, and mini foilist loves it!
Still, £14k for an e63 sixer to do "old and older" could be fun!

This really is a mass delusion, propogated by chatter; nothing else.
Just been comparing them both, earlier and as the dew defined every curve, fold line, cut and crevice, they both look utterly purposeful.
The M6 from the rear is squat and bang on the sporran whilst from most 3/4 aspects it evokes a huge desire to attack Wessex.
Whilst the hooning experience of the M5 is fabulous and it is undoubtedly the ultimate all rounder, period the hooning capacity of the coupe is on another level.
I say this in the warm afterglow of brief stint of comparative evaluation, executed just now whilst Scouse was returning from his night job.
Ok, La?
