i think i know what Subaru need to do to make this car more widely appealing;

put a 5.4 ltr v10 in it, but label the car a 5.7 v10, just so whoever is driving feels a bit better about themselves
use an in house but actual out of house tuner and put the tuners badges on every flat surface so that everyone including helicopter pilots can see what it is
add loads of chrome everywhere that is possibble, around the windscreen, bottoms of doors, all around the boot, on the sills, and on every flat surface inside.
put a massive grill on it, again so the person inside feels a bit better about themselves
make sure there is one of your cars on every street corner, exclusivity is not in your vocabulary
add LED wky running lights to the front
add below bumper lights that come on as you turn, ( sorry already did that with the GTB in 1995!!!!!!!)
add intrusive traction control
take away any driver feeling so you have no idea whats going on
make everything an optional extra and charge the earth for it
make sure the dealers are rude, surly and up themselves
increase profits to multi billion by charging inflated prices and all the extras, lose build quality and customers, then admit you have lost build quality and try and redeem yourself

that should make Subaru more appealing to the doubters

Another piece of Jap crap to add to the already massive collection.
rofl fantastic. Owned plenty, have you?
Owned a few, driven many, and its pretty much the same story with all of them. The interior is an after thought, the styling....ok maybe style is the wrong word, and they are nasty to drive on the road.....good for the track though. Saying that, I could think of quite a few cars I would rather spend that sort of money on, that would be decent to drive on the road, and quick enough round a track.

You forgot to add the giant centre console covered with buttons so you can feel like you have more 'features'.

IMO Subaru have lost the plot a bit, and in some ways gotten a bit above their station… Between the Impreza and Evo a relatively speaking small and unique segment of the market was catered for. There was no competition in this space, and it was all for them… However, moving to the hatchback, losing the outlandish looks and exhaust note (small but important part), in an attempt to appeal to the broader market was doomed to failure.

The hatchback market is full of very competent quick models, and provide the perfect balance of practicality with power, which is exactly what the typically buyer of these cars wants. They don’t want to go round corners on 3 wheels, or give their children whiplash, and if they tried they would just get a earful off the wife.

The new one is a tentative step in the right direction, but with the new price point and the lack of a decent soundtrack leaves most hardcore fans with no choice but the Evo. I currently have an MY05 STi (the best IMO), and when the time comes I am afraid it will be an Evo. Also, if there is no WRX then there will not be the volume of cars to encourage aftermarket manufactures to produce the bits required to jazz it up a bit.

How a car manufacturer can so fundamentally misinterpret their own market is a amazing.

Isn't the Evo the same price? And sounds like a blender, while the comments on this thread from someone who has driven the new STi were quite complimentary of its noise. wink

So that sounds like a yes. Mind you having heard earlier Spec-C Imprezas (with the equal length headers) being driven in anger, they don't have the burble but still sound fantastic, very aggressive and quite unlike any inline-4 I've ever heard.

The Lancer Evolution (X I assume) sounds like a blender? Not sure about that! It doesn't have the burble of a Scooby, but it has a huge bass presence and sounds like rumbling thunder at low revs, up to a jet engine scream at high revs. Lancer Evolutions have been some of the best sounding cars on the market since their introduction and the new one is no different.

You are right about the sound of the spec-c, it doesnt really have the burble but it does have a better sound than an Evo at full chat. Its a bit of a screamer really, reminded me a little of a Civic Type-r at full revs.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

As a former Impreza owner, I am always keen to see if Subaru will ever again be able to match the brilliant era of the 90's. Whenever they announce a new car, despite having my hopes dashed time and time again, I still hold out some deluded hope and pray to the rally rep gods that this time they have made a car that could recapture some of that lost magic.

Unfortunately those hopes have been dashed again. I don't know who has been designing Subaru's for the last decade but they should be put against a wall alongsides Mr Bangle and shot.

This car looks attrocious, a bad copy of other badly designed cars, all brought together in a mish mash. Were is the aggression? Where is the purposefulness that used to mark out Subaru's of old? If I wanted bland and boring I'd go and buy a standard Eurobox from any number of manufacturers.

To all those saying this is much better because it's toned down, WHY? There are already literally hundreds of bland boxes on the road for you to buy if that is what floats your boat. Subaru's have always been about attitude, it's a shame they sold out.

The Impreza peaked with the 2 door P1\Type R\22b and has been dead ever since as far as I am concerned. RIP Impreza

I think it's a slight improvement over the Hatch .......... just.

A rear spoiler would help the looks. Impreza's have never been pretty.

The Interior is a vast improvement over the last version (I owned a 2005 STI) and I was quite impressed when sat inside one. It's no Audi though.

The Sports seats as standard is a good move.

The Price is a little on the high side, but discounts should be available soon.

As for a PPP upgrade? No.

I would have thought that all that work Cosworth has done with the CS400 will not just be for that car. I would suspect a CPP (Cosworth Performance Pack) could be a dealer option pretty soon.

I have a soft spot for Subaru. Would I buy the new Saloon? Maybe. If it get's some good reviews, and CPP becomes available (350bhp would be nice) and they give it a rear spoiler, then yes, I maybe would.

I'd just wait for Subaru to offer the CPP pack free, like they did when I bought my 2005 STI.

The burble is still there on the modern 2.5 hatches and the old hawkeyes all you need to do is remove the resonator, this is what kills the burble. I have a hayward and scott cat back exhaust on my hatch and it sounds fantastic, as good as any classic scooby.

Is the burble not to do with the unequal headers, something that I thought they lost after the hawkeye?

They still have a burble with equal length headers, just nit as prominent. Not sure if the headers are equal or unequal now but it is the resonator which kills it.

The euro 2.5 still has the unequal length headers, the JDM 2.0 has the equal length ones.
