"There's a good reason though. They haven't imported any for 2 years and stocks ran dry ages ago. I know it's exchange rate linked, but it's now £6000 more to buy than in 2008 before you even consider PPP and the options list."

This chaps hit the nail on the head for me:6k more than the STI cost (for some retuned suspension, a better set of seats and a boot, which has been available overseas since the new shape was launched 4 years ago) is a bit rich.

One interesting thing about this topic is it shows a return to form for SUBARU Impreza's in general; they've allways been quite a contentious motor car. There's allways been strong discussions about their "particular" styling aka Blobeye etc. I'm sure that this car is a damn good drive as I thought that the STI hatch was a allready a pretty great steer (with the SI drive on its sharpest setting anyway), and it should have the usual mechanical integrity associated with Subaru, but at 33k it's just a bit too expensive IMHO.

All that said I'm pleased that SUBARU UK have finally brought a saloon back! I'll definately consider one as a replacement if the price drops to sensible levels.

Is it true they haven't imported any for 2 years? So if you buy 1 now it's allready 2 years old???

How a car manufacturer can so fundamentally misinterpret their own market is a amazing.

No disrespect to the people that like the softened image, however, these in buying numbers will not exceed that of the hardcore following and enthusiasts. IMO the vast majority of people that like the new ones would not actually buy one, as they will opt for a lower maintenance less commitment FWD hot hatch… Therefore, Subaru have simply reduced the sales of the Impreza… Any marketing guru that understood the car market could have told them this… There was no other outcome… Perhaps Subaru is now run by Reginald Perrin.

The problem was they listed to the journos who moaned on about how they were too hardcore and didn't have enough 'soft-touch' plastics, shiny buttons and 'styling'.

Once they did that, the journos turned around and said the old one was better and they should never have changed it.

That’s the point though - you created a car for a hardcore enthusiast customer, who inherently don’t give a toss what most journalists think and surely Subaru knew this… So all you achieved was disenfranchisement from your following… Between the Evo and the Impreza they had a captive market… Why on earth then go and enter the most competitive market of all – fast hatches which are ten a penny!

Spot on,

So many fun, quite quick hot hatches about but the EVO and old STi were a fairly unique mix. Very fast, supreme in the wet, easy to drive fast, dynamicaly enjoyable (though obviously not in Elise teritory) AND with all that, the practicality of four doors and a big boot while maintaining a hardcore image.

I used both my EVO V and my Blob eye STi for trips around Europe and they were the almost perfect car. I have a 911 now and its an incredible drive, but its slower in the wet and nowhere near as practical.

Just because the hatches have softer suspension doesn't make them less hardcore. They're still very fast and have brilliant chuckable chassis'.

Reminds me of my old turbo 2000. Dammit I really like this. Wish I didn't, it costs a wallet lightening €68,000 here! eek

More be-spoilered images here (Finnish text though): http://www.subaru.fi/sti_view_and_colors.html

I agree, with the spoiler, I don't think anything Impreza has been removed, it's ugly as fk, looks aggressive, handles like a dream and goes like stink.

Still, shame about the price though. If it had been high 20's I think it would be a hell of a lot more appealing.

Totally agree. If i don't win the PH comp, i'll be keeping a close eye on the classifieds over the next year or so... biggrin
