Absolutely. This is still a fast car today.
Fast enough to put a smile on your face.
Tbf it's not even just the performance. It's a totally different driving experience from anything modern.

Just found this thread, brings back some memories.

I served my time in a small town Landrover/Austin Rover dealership. The dealership sold a few of these.

They were bought by the local Gp, the solicitors etc. They were quite a nice car for the time, fast comfy with loads of boot space. Probably one of Austin rovers better creations.

OT but the countryman estate was very popular with the local farming and landowning fraternity.

I remember them being a generally robust and reliable car (turbo diesel aside) and fairly easy to work on.

A very quick car back in the day looked great in black and red.
I thought it looked best in white which was the colour of the car I took for a test drive.
A few months previous to this I was going to buy the non turbo MG which was also white. I made an appointment to go view and drive the car in the evening at a large well known national dealership. The sales manager was using it as his company car and I had to wait for him arriving when I was there at the agreed time, then when he did arrive I got a strong feeling that it was an inconvenience for him.
I drove the car and liked it, but I didnt like the mark on the rear bumper where he had scraped his golf clubs across it, and they were still in the boot!
As soon as I had finished my test drive he got in the car and drove away leaving me to speak to the salesman who inexplicably disagreed with me on the year of my trade in, which was a January '86 car and he said it was an '85.
Needless to say I did not buy the car and bought a brand new Orion GLSi instead, which turned out to be a poor quality car.
With the long hours that these Sales Manager do, I’m surprised he had time to play Golf biglaugh

I always thought the Montego was one of BL's better efforts (it was a low bar, admittedly!). I wouldn't say no to a nice Turbo.

What was wrong with the turbo diesel? A friends parents had one which pulled a caravan across the uk and Ireland for years and it never even got a clutch!

I hated everything about BL, but always had a soft spot for the Princess. I also liked the Rover SD1 and Triumph TR7. The rest I absolutely loathed.
I did own a Rover 827 Vitesse in later years that turned out to be a disaster.
Notwithstanding the above I love it when people restore and maintain cars like the Montego.

Would definitely keep a BMW 320d honest.

Bit of a 'wouldnt start from here' moment that isn't it. Still, shows how rare they have got.

I was reading the article, saw it was a sale in Nottinghamshire and then only £695.
I thought I might buy that, then I saw the date. 12 years ago!
I wonder if it’s still for sale?

How many Montegos are left on the roads these days? In garages? And if you wanted one where would you start your search?
