My sons 07 golf has a problem with the abs the local garage told him to talk to the main dealer as it seems to be a common fault the main dealer has offered to fix the problem at half the cost I am a little suspicious and wonder why they make such an offer has anyone heard of a possible recall to deal with a break problem
It is not at all unusual for decent manufacturers to offer to pay part of the cost where a car is out of warranty but suffers a known problem.
The main dealer will soon tell you if there's a recall on the car. ABS failing and throwing a warning light would not necessarily give rise to a recall. ABS failing and NOT throwing a warning light would almost certainly generate a recall.

I've heard about this and know Audi do this as my old boss had a gearbox failure just out of warranty and since its a known issue Audi offered to pay half, not sure if its a V.A.G thing but pretty good really otherwise you'd end up paying for it all.the abs light on those golfs are a very common problem but it wasn't a recall issue. It will either be the sensor or control unit / pump. Before paying out too much money to anyone I would plug it in to vag.com to see if it can tell you which sensor is registering as faulty. The sensors are dirt cheap from german & swedish & are easy to swap so it might even be worth changing them anyway. You then need to get the fault codes cleared from the ecu. If it then turns out to be the control until / pump you will be looking at around the 1k mark. Hope this helps

Main dealers OUGHT to employ Techicians. Though some are not worthy of any of the terms above. And are "guessers" I like to think I fall into the Technician bracket.
FWIW personally, I must have done something like 20-25 ABS pumps in the last 18 months. We fit the uprated modified unit. Most case VW chip in with goodwill. Not saying BBA Reman can't supply an equally reparied item. But will they fit it for you and bleed it and reset all the basic settings? And of course no main dealer (of any franchise) will happily fit non-gen parts without writing all over the invoice. Customer supplied parts, no warranty.

No retrospective claiming is allowed (I'd be well pissed if I'd paid and then find out they were offering goodwill.)
Here is summary of my experience on this issue.
After the ABS light went on in my 2007 Touran, I got the local VW dealer/garage to do a check (where I bought the car and who have done all the services). They confirmed that the ABS unit had gone, but could be fixed by replacing the pressure sensors, for a total cost of just under £600.
Having read this post on PistonHeads, I went to back to them and was told "...yes we would have contacted VW on your behalf to get a goodwill payment, but did not want to get your hopes high....."
After I took the car in, garage called to say that VW have agreed a goodwill of 100% parts and 50% labour. I questioned why only 50% on labour and asked to speak to VW directly (0800 833920). Later that day got a call from garage, with confirmation that VW are covering full costs.
A total of 5 mins on the phone saved me £600.
BTW - make sure you get the 2yr parts warranty that should come with the replacement.

could I also have a copy of the original table please? My 07 reg (actual date of registration was 04/05/2007 so just withing the 4 years barrier) Golf 1.4 TSI GT has just developed the same problem after owning the car for only 3.5 weeks. Only 20K miles on clock and gutted. Don't see why I should contribute anything towards fixing this as obvoiusly VW have built cars with substandard parts.
