IMO the new Cayennes are very nice for what they are - nothing like the old ones. Granted the old Cayenne was terrible, the new model not so. So you'd take an X5 over a Cayenne?

My disapproval of the X5 and X6 M models is on record on multiple occasions.

However, that does not prevent me from laughing at this vainglorious pronouncement. Does he think the RS6 and RS5 are fabulous dynamic successes? Powerful and fast in a straight line, certainly, but they haven't exactly got the testers excited. Perhaps he should spend more time trying to understand what makes the non-SUV M models (and the XFR) tick, before he even thinks about producing an RS model of the hideously vulgar Q7.
Audi like most car makers have in my opinion lost the plot. For years I have been ignoring nearly every new car due to the fact that the weight just keeps going up with each iteration. Even Lotus!

The tightening of EU emissions policy, which at first I thought draconian, is actually a blessing.

Witness the Sesto Elemento, the Millechili VW bluesport(shed 150kg please), etc, at last some are heading in the right direction ish.

The 100 year old tech that is the internal combustion engine is finally being moved on at a more decent rate, coupled with demand for lighter structural components pushing the manufacturing process of ‘exotic’ materials ahead, nanowire battery tech, etc… hopefully the next ten years will be interesting.

P.S. Love the Atom V8

No, they are all hideous. If you need to genuinely go off road then get a Land Rover or Range Rover, not some vile Germanic barge.

I'd like to drive an RSQ7, the idea of a two-tonne truck that can chase down most sports cars sounds like a giggle.

Owning one would be a bit different though, you just know it would have 24" wheels, bits of plastic chrome surrounding everything and enough LEDs to make the sun redundant. paperbag

couldn't agree more. Though I think the RR's image has suffered a bit with this ridiculous fashion of trumpeting around in ludicrously big SUVs. There is absolutely no need whatsoever for the X5, or the Q7, or MB's ever growing line of SUVs (apart from the G, but that's been said before). The only reason I can think of is boot space, and can't see anyone going for an X5 (or any of its stupid variants - most notably the X6) simply because the 5er touring isnt big enough.
If you really do need to go off road, go for Land Rover. Their 4x4s haven't changed that much (mechanically) since they began selling them, which can only mean one thing: THEY WORK!

Nowadays the Germans don't even bother putting off road tyres on their 4x4s. That to me says it all.

The 5 Series Touring doesn't come with a third row of seats.

Ever seen a Range Rover Sport off road? Ever seen the wheels on most real Range Rovers?

New Cayenne isn't any slouch off road. On road, it'll trounce any of the 4x4's you have all mentioned.

The X5 isn't that bad off road either, it makes quite a good dakar car.

The only reason a Cayenne can't go off road is that the brakes require very big wheels and you can't get off-road tyres for them. I'm guessing a Range Rover Sport has the same problem.

Can't imagine why BMW didn't call their sporty SUVs MX5 & MX6 wink - it would have been logical, following on from M3, M5, M6

I've no doubt the RR is still king off road, what annoys me is the fact the Cayennes are all tarred with the same brush as the 'bling-mobiles' like the X6/Q7 etc. The Cayenne is far superior in every way, and, other than a top spec RR, I struggle to think of a 4x4 out there which can better the Cayenne Turbo.

And I bet you've driven both, haven't you?

The odd LR aside.... most of the genuine off roaders round my way are (never been washed) L200's (or trucks of a similar ilk). Tough as old boots. Crude as old boots too.

I admire Audi for admitting that they need to wait until their R&D staff have caught up with BMW, rather than launch something inferior.

That's fine - each to their own. What's better about a Q7 or X6 compared to the Cayenne then?

What about them? As an off-roader? In terms of speed? None is as good an off-roader as a Range Rover and if you want a fast car, buy an XFR, M5 or E63 instead (or, given you don't avert your eyes at the sight of the Cayenne, a Panamera).

+1 To that. We were talking about 4x4's though. People do seem to have lost the point with 4x4's - they're never taken off road. 99% of RR's will never go off road. However, if you had to have a 4x4, which was being discussed, then the Cayenne can't be compared to the likes of the X6/Q7. That's all I'm saying.

If you really felt you had to have a fast SUV, then I don't see the Cayenne Turbo as being superior to the X5 M, but it really is a battle of pointless cars.

Now, I have just ordered an X5. i'm not delighted about it, because I'd much rather buy the next M5, but arrival of a third small child is forcing me into it. I need the one with three rows of seats. I'd rather havethe sameinterior packaging in a normal rwd car at saloon ride height, but it's not available.

I've driven the X6 M, by the way, and it failed to stir an ounce of excitement. It is very fast, but in a rather dull way.

Thank god they didn't produce an RS version of the SUV's, like more mothers need huge amounts of power to ferry their kids around. Sense has prevailed. Please note BMW.
