RE: Audi: No RS For SUVs
Discussion
Mr Geoff is right. I think the X6-M is the most hideous thing ever. I'm sure it's fast and dull, and as brash and tasteless as one of those over sized gold watches.
To think that it bears the same "M" badge as an E30 M3 is just plain wrong. It shows the owner wants to display their wealth and lack of automotive taste

So who here has actually owned one and taken it off-road?
I have had a Cayenne S (old shape) which had M&S tyres fitted on 18" wheels and regulalry went off road
I have had a LR disco 3 which went off road once, got stuck and had to be towed out by my cayenne.. never took it tried any really difficult stuff in it off road again as 1) it was always in the garage 2) it was not as good as the cayenne
Currently I have an M class 320 cdi, which whilst not as good as the cayenne is still better of road compared with the LR 3 and does 30-32mgg
Landrovers of any sort - built badly and break down
Merc ok,
But the best one off road was the cayenne with air suspension...
Having said that most 4x4 don't go of road, but most sports cars don't get driven like they should, and most prius sit at 90 in the outside lane burning more fuel that i do in my diesel audi... but just because most people don't use them for what they were designed doesn't mean we should stop people making them...

If you really felt you had to have a fast SUV, then I don't see the Cayenne Turbo as being superior to the X5 M, but it really is a battle of pointless cars.
Now, I have just ordered an X5. i'm not delighted about it, because I'd much rather buy the next M5, but arrival of a third small child is forcing me into it. I need the one with three rows of seats. I'd rather havethe sameinterior packaging in a normal rwd car at saloon ride height, but it's not available.
I've driven the X6 M, by the way, and it failed to stir an ounce of excitement. It is very fast, but in a rather dull way.
Is there time to change your order? if not you now have a car you didn't want that will depreciate like a stone, that you are never going to use off road and that will make your heart sink every time you get overtaken by an M5...Now, I have just ordered an X5. i'm not delighted about it, because I'd much rather buy the next M5, but arrival of a third small child is forcing me into it. You could have had your cake and eaten it... http://www.multimac.co.uk/quick_checker_results/6/...
Maybe next time do a bit more research before parting with your cash...
Thanks for the patronising answer. Whatever Porsche fanboys may think, the X5 is in no way inferior to the Cayenne and it's a lot less ugly.
Who says I'll sell the M5? I have the other car anyway for fun and I may even change that for soemthing spicier in the next year or so.
The MultiMac works, but isn't great with rear-facing seats (too vertical and take up too much space) and it is not easily removable when you want to transport adults - deeply buried bolts must be undone.
Depreciation is a fact of life and doesn't really matter if you keep the car for four years or so. Pay cahs and there is just an annual cost to own the car once you deduct he price you sell it for from the price you paid for it.
I can live with getting overtaken by an M5 when I have the whole family on board.

You said you wanted the next M5 but you had had to buy a car you didn't want.. and i quote
" i'm not delighted about it, because I'd much rather buy the next M5, but arrival of a third small child is forcing me into it. "
I offered you a solution to allow you to get the next gen M5 rather than a car you didn't want... but instead you now defend the choice of car and seem quite happy with it... which is fine - I'm glad you have changed your mind.
Also i don't think i at any point compared the cayenne vs an x5 - I haven't owned an x5 so am not really in a position to comment - I did comapre it to cars I have owned - a LR3 and a M Class and said it was better - but as neither of which is a X5 there is no need for you to get hot under the collar defending the car you aren't delighted about owning....
Bloomin' heck its the last time I bother to try helping a BMW driver - but thanks for reaffirming the stereotype

Having sold my V10 RS6 after 6 months, I am pleased I had kept my 2003 V8 which I have had from new.
IMO the new Cayenne Turbo is a joy to drive on trans European journeys .. a bit like a 911 turbo on stilts.
Certainly the best 4x4 upright vehicle if one is looking for performance / handling & 4x4 in one package.

I didn't realise I was hot under the collar, although I did find your tone patronising - the bit about research - I've done a lot." i'm not delighted about it, because I'd much rather buy the next M5, but arrival of a third small child is forcing me into it. "

I'm happy with my choice, rather than excited the way I am when I buy an M car or an Aston. Now do you understand? As for the next M5, the large cash outlay I woudl have put into the M5 is going into the X5, but I might still keep the M5.
If the tills ring out loud enough with M SUV/AMG SUV cash, expect this vanity statement to be quickly forgotten
Audi RS SUV announced 2013
"Oh I said that did I, well yes but that was in 2010, we now have the advanced know how, to do this sort of thing in a SUV without any compromise to our expression of performance"

Well since everyone is talking about porsche SUV , bmw SUV ,and merc SUV , let me just go off topic and speak about my opinion on the Q7
i drove one last year _ well i hired it, being young i wouldnt think owning one would be possible right now but yes its quite dull and it looks good at the same time.
and the one i hired was a 3.0 tdi S line quattro and yes i did thrash it on the A406 and suprisingly it had enough torque and power to make u say phhhwwwoooaaaa but tbh saying london and high speed toghether is like saying crysler is going to make engines for lambhoghini.
well coming to the point- i think audi is right- having driven one, in my opinion i believe that u dont need more then their current range _ at least not more then 3.0 tdi s for where i live

Getting us into quiet a tizzy isnt it!
For me, I would love to drive a V12 Q7, but I dont know for how long. Having driven a Toureg V10 to Rockingham then on down to Hockenhiem (excuse the name dropping) with a trailer, I was absolutely in awe of the explosive acceleration and the fuel bill. The trailer was an American spec 25ft twin axle job, it contained a Touran and all the BBQ/outdoor supplies for race weekend. I would say the Q7 V12 would be as, if not more, mightly impressive.

bks....BMW said this too once upon a time. They will sell in bucket loads so they will be made.
Audi already make 2 tonne plus 4x4 estates with the RS badge so not a big jump up from that now is it..
Yeah, I can still clearly remember the press releases saying that SUVs don't follow the "M" philosophy, so "there'll never be an M SUV" and all that BS. If Audi thinks they can compete and make a profit with such a vehicle, it won't be long before this statement is shamelessly revoked. After all, building cars is a business, they won't care if they ps off a few PHers, 'cause they'll sell butt loads of them to everyone else! Audi already make 2 tonne plus 4x4 estates with the RS badge so not a big jump up from that now is it..
As for the "best 4x4" argument, I'd say Bowler trumps LR, Audi, BM, and Porsche! For the mere mortals who can't afford to drive a Nemesis, then the "best of the rest" is as follows: Defender 90, '66 to '77 Ford Bronco, and Jeep Wrangler (admittedly, 1st gen Broncos and Wranglers probably aren't common in the UK.) The modern "4x4s" are all too big with wheels that are too big to go off-roading.
I use off-road potential as my sole criterion for determining "best 4x4", because if you're never going to go off road, a front wheel drive car is perfectly adequate for you.
